What, no hockey card for Travis Zajac, a former Salmon Arm Silverback!? (They probably missed him at the hockey card company)
I was telling a good friend of mine that I wish the Habs were playing back to back for the next 40 nights, to get this season over with. No such luck.

NJ, in my opinion, is a lesson in the dangers of tanking. They have not one but two first overall picks on their roster - Hischier in his 5th year and Hughes in his 3rd year. Both are paid like big time players but aren't earning their money. And the Devils are still a crap team, they have a losing record and a negative goal differential.
They don't look like they are really going anywhere in the near future.

When you are getting the best player in the draft I expect them to be impactfull right away.

Obviously he's not working hard enough or productive enough to belong in the top lines nor is he much use in a fourth line as an energy guy. Maybe the new requirement is to excel as a tripping hazard? Serious head scratcher unless there is a plan behind it.

I'll take that as a compliment - I think. NEVER a good thing! It's horrible on the eye wrinkles and can produce facial cracking if one smiles. (My wife claims that she has nothing to do with my decline into crankinism. I point to my Richard 9 and her fake concern over my Habs blight. )

Looks like the lineup tonight. The boys could/should actually win this puppy even with that lineup (don’t change Dom - it is clearly not in your DNA). Jersey is on a B2B and only managed one goal in Ottawa last night. Maybe the truck honking bothered them.

That is one weak looking d corp. Clague and Wideman must put the shivers in the opponents' forwards.
Cole better see some PP time.
Dauphin between Gally and Hoff should be interesting.

Dom Dom got the line generating blender from BargainBin
Im not sure in what world Lehkonen is a first liner, and Caufield is a fourth liner.
This team also has a strange fascination with Paul Byron too.
Good thing I’ve checked out on this season.

The only reason I can see, other than Clod still calling the shots, is that they are being showcased... lekhy, Byron

2006-07 Upper Deck #225 Travis Zajac YG RC Chuckle. Thanks Dis. Number 57? God I hate high numbers. I will always lobby to "retire' names (and unis) to the rafters but keep using the numbers to remind us of the players from the past. That also allows us to throw away numbers higher than 30.

Buddy, be careful about your mental health because you're sounding like that Cranky guy! Tanking is absolutely no guarantee of a future contention. Buffalo and Devils are waving at us..... I'll take that as a compliment - I think. And I have to completely disagree. Yes, we can pull out examples of teams that tanked and got nowhere. I can pull out more of teams that didn't tank and have never won the cup. It's all about probabilities and it's way more probable to win a Cup by having elite players (which are almost always only available on a tank and drafting high) than it is to compete every year in that region where you get disappointed every year because you don't have elite talent. Winning a cup involves Tanking - Good Management - Luck. Tanking is useless when the top pick is Nail Yakupov. But it's really smart when the top pick is McDavid, or MacKinnon or Stamkos or Ovechkin. Or even to have a top 5 pick in those good draft years. Tanking is also useless when the head guy is Kevin Lowe or any number of GM's in Buffalo or Mike Milbury. Those guys might as well be picking 95th rather than 1st because they know how to screw it up. Bergevin, in hindsight, same thing. Let's hope Hughes is different and then if we finish low, we have 2 of the 3 criteria in place.

But Hughes is definitely elite.

Maybe the new requirement is to excel as a tripping hazard? Serious head scratcher unless there is a plan behind it. It might be less complicated than we think and it all has to do with seniority. Habs RW's are Gallagher, Anderson, Toffoli, Armia and Caufield. The first three are all offensive types or at worst, very definitely not defensive wingers. Say you wanted Caufield on one of the top lines. I'd probably have Caufield on the top line . I'd want Armia on the 4th line because it needs his skills more than on the other 3 lines and it gets the least ice time. That leaves you with having one of Anderson, Toffoli or Gallagher in the press box. (Or on left wing). Much easier, if you're the coach to put Armia on the left wing 4th line, Caufield on the RW 4th line and that keeps the vets (and the bigger contracts) on the top 3 lines. CAufield isn't going to complain, coach doesn't care about Armia as he is replaceable and then the last 3 are happy as clams. All based on the headache rule. That line-up ensures the fewest Advils needed for the coach.

This team also has a strange fascination with Paul Byron too. Good thing I’ve checked out on this season. Lehkonen on a first line can make sense if the first line needs a forechecking disruptor who can still pass and make plays. Bert Olmstead was that kind of guy and he played with either Rocket or Geoffrion. I like him a lot better with Suzuki and Toffoli than if Drouin or Hoffman were there, but ideally he'd be further down the line-up. Caufield on the 4th line is silly, but what else do we expect from a coach who uses Laurent Dauphin on the 2nd line, a player who has never had a ppg season in the AHL. I kinda like Paul Byron. Every line he's on seems to cause problems for the opposition. We hear now that he's battled a hip injury for a few years and kept playing through it rather than fixing it (is that typical or what from the Bergevin dynasty?). I'm curious to see how he plays when healthy. Byron is one of the few bargain bin acquisitions that worked out. Contract is too high, though.

Seems like it doesn't matter if it's vets or newbies. Outshot 12 to 3 and it's 2-0

He can't hold his own when it comes to the cycling and boardwork in the offensive zone He's played 39 games in the NHL...why dont they trade him for a used bag of pucks and see how well he does elsewhere... send him to the ducks so he can team up with Zegras... they seem to know how to develop talent

Whatever our system is for exiting our zone, it’s terrible. It looks like the guys have to look up to pass rather than knowing where a guy should be. Petry was right when he ‘commented’ on the system. You never saw that problem with Julien. I think it’s critical that Ducharme is removed. For many, many reasons but all related to damaging players, culture, systems, etc. it’s really easy to play Montreal and that’s not a belief we want to proliferate any further.

Caufield is just too small and weak for this league. He can't hold his own when it comes to the cycling and boardwork in the offensive zone Cycling & board work?? Hmmm, seems like the Habs had this guy called Guy Lafleur who did pretty well without having to cycle & do Board work. Seriously, that isn't Caufield's strength & he shouldn't be asked to do it. A coaches job is to put his players in a position to emphasize their strengths, not their weaknesses. Just my 2 cents Cheers
