That USDP team was underwhelming but I liked Smilanic in the games I saw, one of the best player on that team. Creative, probably the best on that team along with Bordeleau. Just a bit small. Not sure if he has beefed up since then.
And a first in 2023, even if late, is good to spread over two drafts. FLO did not have a 22 first to give.

From Elite Prospects ...
Smilanic is a complete talent who can be relied on in all situations. He anticipates passes and can cut them off using his long reach. In defensive zone battles, Smilanic uses his frame efficiently to outmuscle competition and dig pucks out of scrums. -EliteProspects 2020 NHL Draft Guide

About the NCAA worries, he is from the same junior program (the NTDP) as Caufield and Farrell. Those guys are tight. I don’t see an issue. His college team is also very strong. Good development place. He is a fun player to watch.

I like it. That is a very good haul for Chiarot, who has been a really solid player for three seasons in Montreal. I guess I could give my brother-in-law a "I told you so" but I think I will resist the temptation.
So do Gorton and Hughes want Smilanic to sign now? I mean, he could just as well stay in school and play at least another year of NCAA hockey.

Good for Chiarot. He's going to a terrific team.

I know. It is always a concern, so hopefully it sorts itself out. I expect they try to sign him before four years. With the CC and Farrell connection I don’t see a big deal yet.

Good for Chiarot. He's going to a terrific team. I am happy he gets a chance to go for it again. Fully deserved. And maybe he gets to pound a Leaf and knock them out.

But then again, they have a ton of CHL guys they have to sign next year. It could make sense.

Oh, and Smilanic was on the 2022 USA WJC team, so he should be back in AB in August. Another Habbie prospect to watch/cheer. The dude can skate!

I think this a great trade..but it also further nails down our lack of defense.
I hope he resigns with us at a home discount. He's not the ideal player but we are years away from our hard nosed prospects taking over.
A few more years....

Expected a RHD young prospect in a trade, but Monday is a long way off.

They will have a higher value then now...but also ears open for trades that won't happen at the deadline and we can pick them up NOW. Zacha comes to mind. No one is going to trade for him as a playoff player, but the price may be right to trade for him now. Of course, his next contract has to be ironed out and I suspect it's better to do it now then wait until FA frenzy inflating everyone's hopes and dreams. Here's hoping...

Smile sounds like a great investment. And when this season started I would have probably been happy to get him straight up for Chariot. So to get Fla's first next year is certainly a bonus. But it really is more like a second as Fla will likely finish in top 4 or 5 which means we're drafting somewhere around 28-32 overall. All of Fla's core are young and on contract for at least next year so they will only get stronger.
Still a very nice deal by Hurts.

They guys sounds like baby formula... we'll have to call him Babs... lol
Someone on a Toronto biased media site posted that he was ranked 20th in his draft year but was injured and that's why he dropped to the 2nd round
Edit: he was drafted 3rd round 74th.
Supposedly Hughes and Gorton know him well... believe he played with Hughes kids... the exec's are getting guys they know...

Should get a nice ovation on his return to the Bell Centre March 24. And an even bigger ovation next year in a Habs uniform

Taken #74 in the same draft as #43 Emil Heineman, #47 Luke Tuch and #48 Jan Mysak. Not to mention #16 Kaiden Guhle. Cool that they get to develop together possibly. If they all become pros, we might have something brewing

The Habs also retained $1,750,000 of Ben Chiarot's salary, as per CapFriendly.com ... Cheers.

Expected a RHD young prospect in a trade, but Monday is a long way off. In my mind Eddy and Romy are legit top 4. Petry should be a top 4 save for his current funk which may be unalterable without a trade. But a trade would free up $6.2 in cap space. Letang is a FA and wouldn't be getting too much more than that. So Petry out and Letang in would be a pretty good swap. They're both 34. And it may be that with Fla solidifying their D, the contenders will seek out Petry in the next few days - one can only hope. The hope is we will really only need to find one other top 4 D for next year while waiting for the kids to arrive. And that's where PK comes in

It is concerning they are bringing players and management in with close ties to "Horton Hears a Hughes" ... and brining in undersized projects. Let's see what unfolds, I 'spose. Maybe Florida crashes and burns next year and we get more lottery balls .

According to Ben's interview with Engels, he'd be keen to come back:
EE: If they come calling in the summer, will you pick up the phone?
BC: Absolutely! I’ve loved my time in Montreal. Nothing but good things to say about the team and the city. It’s been everything I thought it would be. With all the highs and lows that come with being in a market like this, it fits my personality and I love it. I’d come back here in a heartbeat.
While I appreciate Ben wasn't going to say anything different, I'd still like to think he's being sincere. Of course when Sabres offer $6 million and Habs only offer $5, we'll see where his heart is in relation to his wallet.

And the exact same junior program that recently developed Jack and Luke Hughes, Trevor Zegras, Jake Sanderson, Spencer Knight and Cole Caufield to name a few. There are dogs through the system, but some gems too. Let’s see where he ends up in a few years before we judge him based on where plays.

Hopefully Xhejak and Guhle are learning'n'hurting from him and take over. Two years...that's it. But I see 6x6 in his future which is frankly too much. 5x5 for him and Kadri will fix my Viagra addiction for my male pattern balding...
