Brian Wilde on TSN inferred that Habs, draft wise, are focused on size. That comes, Wilde claims, from a reliable inside source. Which means they won’t pick a smaller skilled guy unless its a really high pick (#1). Fantilli & Carlsson are both big, but the next wave…Smith, Moore, Michkov, Benson, Cristall and others are not big. Warning sign for we fans?

I understand the desire, but all in all, our think Robidas has been teaching our kids pretty good this year. At some points during the season, we had 5 rookie defenceman in the lineup. They have exceeded my expectations.

I don't want to suffer years of Chipchurra, Tinordi, McCarron, De La Rose, Poehling, because of their size.

I know Kent Hughes has mentioned in the past that with some small guys on the roster and some more in the system, that they want to surround them with bigger players. I am sure that 32 GMs would feel the same way. But to infer that they would make size a determining factor on any pick not first overall, is quite the fantasy stretch. All things being equal, I can see it being a preference. But they want guys who have good hockey IQ, can play the uptempo game that HuGo and MSL all envision the team playing down the road, and the ability to play fast AND think fast. This group picked Mešár, Beck, Hutson, Rohrer and Tourigny just last summer for all their skill and hockey traits. I cannot see this group reverting back to the Bicep Club mentality that we have recently escaped from. In the end, the proof will be in the actual picks. But spoiler alert, this is a draft of lots of undersized skilled guys.

Seventeen, NW can probably give a better answer, but my sense is that most execs and scouts are very excited about the talent level of the kids likeliest to go in the 4-14 range. As you alluded to, there may be some residual feeling that the second tier does not appear to include a lot of physically robust kids. And maybe it is also considered odd (negative?) that 2023 appears light on d-men worthy of going in the first half of the first round.

And today he is going off the deep end because Pronman of the Athletic had guys listed in different order than he expected. First, it is early March and kids have not yet played at the IIHF U18s or CHL playoffs, two areas where kids separate themselves from the pack. Second, after the top tier of 5 or so, there is a big bunch of players in the next tier that teams likely will have ranked in loads of different orders right now. I probably could pick ten different guys with the Habs two picks and justify them all as of now.

Due to the dearth of big guys and top tier defenders, some GMs/scouts will pick some of those types too early.

I agree with you guys more than Wilde. I too think that the defining factors to me are Hockey IQ, skating and compete level. Naturally you can't have too many small guys. The Stanley Cup champs rarely come with a lot of smaller players, but if you're Tampa you don't win without Point and Palat and Kucherov, the latter two of who are kind of average size if not small. I don't care if Patrick Kane is small, but if your 3rd line winger is small too, it might be an issue. Size doesn't matter for elite guys.
Hindsight is such a killer. Redrafting last year, would you take Nemec, Cooley or Jiricek over Slajkovsky? Maybe. But 2 years from now, that choice might favour Slaf. Kotkaniemi is a guy who fit that 'projection' model. His production has been underwhelming for 3 years, but he had a terrible development track, combined with injuries, then his first year in Carolina, he finds himself behind Aho, Trochek and Staal at centre. He has an opportunity this year and his ppg are the best of his career at.49 and his scoring the last 15 games or so has been near a ppg. His Corsi this year is 60%. Was he a mistake or not? We may need another season after this one to get a better answer.

A freshman defender who is undersized just won a scoring title! That’s good, right?

Roy with a game winning goal, two assists and the first star in a big Phoenix win last night.
Beck with a goal and assist. Nice finish on his breakaway.
Mailloux added his 23rd of the season in a 5-2 loss.

With Mešár’s three assists (and first star last night), he is at 45 points in 45 games. He has been really playing well and with more confidence lately, even if the points have not been mind blowing.

Nothing fancy on the assist, but it is on the GWG and keeps his points streak going (2a last night) since moving to Gatineau. Kidney is #19 in white.

Don’t get to post many Tourigny Slovakian highlights. Here was his first Extraliga playoff goal on Saturday. Their first round series is tied up at 2 games each.

A big head to head in the SHL playoffs. In the best of three play in series, Rögle (Engström) and Leksand (Heineman) are currently playing in the deciding rubber match. Tied at one in the first, Engström has Rögle’s goal.
Loser’s season is over. If it is Leksand, look for Heineman to eventually join Laval as he is already under contract in year one of his ELC.

At least we can now all remember the goal that Sund scored during his few months as Habs property/rights. Yes, I don’t expect them to offer him a new deal this summer.
3-1 Rögle now in the third.

My confidence in Heineman adding something to the Habs is waning. My gut feeling is that he's sliding down the prospect ladder. Engstrom, on the other hand, is moving up IMO.

Tourigny’s season ended today too when Dukla Trenčín lost their best of five playoff series 3-2.
He adds to the list of guys who could still play for Laval on PTO/ATO’s this season. And of course, the Struble ELC watch is on full throttle now.

Farrell and Hutson both named to the Hobey Baker top ten list, the first short list in the long process. Quite an accomplishment for the pair to be recognized as amongst the top NCAA layers of the year. Well deserved though.
