It will be interesting to see what management's plan for them will be next camp. There are some, though not many, 19 year old kids ready to weather the grind of the NHL while also producing in a role commensurate with their talent level. Mesar will be an easier case because if he cannot win a spot on the Habs roster out of camp, then he plays in Laval and learns how to deal with the direct, physical brand of hockey played professionally in North America. If I understand correctly, Beck will not be eligible to play in Laval so he would probably get a cup of coffee (9 games) in Montreal to determine whether he can develop properly with the Habs or needs to return to the OHL. Hockey.db lists Beck at 6' 185 pounds. I would hope he'd add another 5 pounds or so this year as he develops. We don't know if he's still growing, of course, but 6' is fine and 190-200 lbs should help him withstand the rigors of the season. His mental game is already NHL ready or better. We have several vets in that mid to high 20 age range that should induce HuGo to move them out for future picks to keep the pipeline full. They will need to be replaced. Beck I think will make it next season. Mesar is less certain, but I wouldn't bet against that speed and skill combination missing out. As you say, the fall back position, at worst, is Laval for a few months. Roy and Kidney will likely be in Laval, but I suspect Sean Farrell will make a strong push to make the big team. Another guy that is too smart and skilled. Also, in a 'Call of the Wilde', Brian Wilde has stated that Lane Hutson has grown 2 inches in height. He seemed very certain of that, but I don't know how he confirmed it. It's enough to make one chuckle. Scouts are really leery of any d-man under 5',10" making the NHL. That's Quinn Hughes height.
If you're 69 inches, forget it. Seventy is ok. I was more concerned about Hutson's weight than his height. He was listed at 148 lbs. That's a weight where huffing and puffing can blow you down. So now, if Wilde is correct, Hutson is 5'11" or thereabouts. No idea what his weight his. Maybe he's added a pound. He's put up 6 points in 5 games, so that part is looking good. More than a ppg for an NCAA defenseman in his rookie season is rather marvelous. I'm going to have to buy some sunglasses, the future's so bright.

I agree that there is a going to be a glut somewhere down the line. I think now we can start spreading out the picks regarding defenseman, forwards and goalies going forward. I also think they will try to get a second rounder in the 2023-24 draft to replace the pick lost in the Dvorak trade. I didn't like that trade then and I don't like it now. No way we are getting a first and second back for him.

Mailloux with the OT winner. Yup, on a breakaway! A two poin game (1g 1a) in the 3-2 win.
Guindon scored in Owen Sound’s 6-5 win.

A pretty quiet Friday night overall for the prospects. The two best showings were a continent apart. Kapanen had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 KalPa win and Davidson had two goals (including the GWG) and an assist in Seattle’s win.

I thought he looked pretty good in training camp and he certainly got a long look from the brass. He played in more preseason games than I expected he would.

I'm still trying to figure out if Lane Hutson has grown at all. The Boston University web site lists him at 5'9" (same as hockeydb) and 155 lbs (7 lbs more than hockeydb). On that last OT goal, the guy back checking him (Brian Chambers) is listed on the UMass-Lowell site as 6'1" 193 lbs. It's hard to compare the two from that clip as they're not standing next to each other. Frankly I don't think he's grown 2 inches as Brian Wilde says he has, but it wouldn't surprise me if he's 5'10". Nice anticipation to step up and intercept the pass and then he did hold off a guy who is 30-40 lbs heavier than him, all while deking the goalie. Eight points in 7 games. Those two goals were against a legitimate NCAA team, not some low tier club. It''s still looking like a good pick, IMO. In his first year at Harvard, Adam Fox had 6-34-40 in 35 games. He's 5'11", 182 lbs. Hutson needs to gain weight.

Getting caught up on Saturday night action. Lane Hutson with both goals in a BU 2–1 OT win over UMass-Lowell. Willie posted both goals above.
Farrell had an assist. Biondi scored his second. Dobeš gave up four in a rare loss.
In Europe, Nurmi is heating up with two assists. Since return from injury, he now plays on the top pairing on HYP in Liiga.
In the CHL, Mailloux and Kidney both had an assist, Davidson scored again, Beck had a goal and an assist, and Guindon had a two assist game.

Farrell #21 gets that puck out quickly to Coronato who makes no mistake.
Beck’s goal.
Biondi’s goal.
Davidson’s goal. A five game goal streak.

On Sunday, Guindon with the GWG and two assists in a 4-1 Attack win. He is quietly top five in OHL points now.
Mešár is back from the flu and pops another goal in a Rangers loss.

Guindon could be one of the steals of the draft... 4th rounder is off to a very hot start... everyone of the picks up to the 4th round are on fire... a great draft for HuGo

More stuff from Saturday. Kapanen had two assists in a KalPa win. He now has 10 points in 20 Liiga games after topping out at 4 points in 15 games last season. He is also been playing an average of 17 minutes in TOI primarily as the 3C, which means he does have the trust of the coaching staff to be eating some decent minutes in a shut down/secondary scoring role. Decent progression in the top mens league and he still has one more year of WJC eligibility left. Biondi scored the insurance ENG from his own crease last night in a 3-1 UMD win. Rohrer added another goal in a 67s win. Rohrer is another to watch at the upcoming WJC for Austria as he is having a good season. And for Willie Dog, here is Mailloux’s assist last night, pinching deep and getting his hard shot off leads to a rebound goal.

At his current ppg pace, Mailloux would be tied for second on his team if he'd played the extra 5 games. It would be nice if he was traded to a playoff contender. The guy sure looks big compared to a few of his teammates. I hope he's progressing on the other front as well.

Mailloux has the physical tools and plenty of offensive skill. And it is good to see him healthy, getting games under his belt, and showing he dominate in major junior hockey. I suppose the big question (and it is hard to answer in the OHL) is whether he thinks the game fast enough to successfully compete with big, fast men.
I am sure Mailloux will get his ELC, compete in camp next September, and in all likelihood play 2023-24 in Laval. Management is probably cautiously optimistic about how everything is progressing, but there is a long way to go.

Tourigny with his first pro goal, in Slovakia, tied it up late for Dukla Trenčín. They did end up losing 3-2 in OT.
