The games start on Thursday in Buffalo. For now, Adam Nicholas and crew are putting the rookies through some challenging drills in Brossard.

The Habs just announced they will live stream all three of their games and provide French PBP. It will be available on a number of platforms: the team’s website, twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

The curious case of Russian prospect Daniil Sobolev. 19 year old Sobolev is a bit of a rare breed amongst Habs prospects; he is an actual RHD. In fact, the only others are Barron, Mailloux and Kostenko, the latter being stuck behind the new Iron Curtain trying to get decent KHL ice time on a Chinese team that plays its home games in an arena in the Moscow Region.
Sobolev left Russia to come over to the OHL to improve his offensive game as he stated that this was just not something that Russian teams focused on with most young defenders. He was scouted as a defensive first guy that could lay the body but had limited offensive upside. His timing was not great as he spent his draft year, like far too many OHL kids, on the sidelines missing a full year of development. As such, he was one of a number of 18 year olds who were already drafted and played their rookie season in the OHL last year.
His offensive numbers really never showed up with just two goals and 17 points in 62 games last season for the Windsor Spitfires. I watched a few of his games and he moves around okay, has decent size, but was a bit of a nothing burger prospect. I was not sure I could see enough that screamed NHL prospect especially given how many other Habs prospects would be vying for a rare ELC over the next few summers.
That being said, I was still a little surprised that he was not participating in the development camp in July, right after the draft. I chalked it up to he might have been spending his off-season back home in Russia and there might have been “complications” getting him over for camp. He is now missing a second straight camp as he is not at rookie camp either. He is not far away as he has been playing and participating at the Spits’ training camp.
Anyway, the new brass may just feel that his style is not enough like the puck possession, puck transition, smart IQ type of prospect that HuGo have been accumulating through trades and the draft since they arrived. They do have a certain player type in mind to play the style of game they want the team to eventually play, and there is a lot more emphasis on skill and puck transition. I tend to agree with that assessment, but it is still a little odd not to at least invite the kid to camp to work with magician Adam Nicholas and see if he can get a bit more out of the kid. Anyway, it is a crowded and now very competitive house for ELC’s and the writing may be on the wall for one prospect already. His rights expire next June 1 and the Habs already have to make decisions on, or lose rights to: Dichow, Mailloux, Struble, Trudeau, Simoneau, and Vrbetic. And then there are guys like Farrell who may leave school early and turn pro. Busy times ahead.

That is shame Roy may miss the tourney. He has really had an incredible 12 months. Hopefully the injury is nothing significant.
Thanks for the update and insights regarding Sobolev. Honestly, I forgot all about him. Being a thick dude capable of physicality, assuming he has the attitude to dish it out, is never a bad thing in my opinion. However, management may have hoped to see more of an evolution of his game this past season. As you say, NW, with a deep pool of prospects ELCs with the Habs will be elusive for some kids.

Jeez Xhejak is a beast.
For those wondering: Kidney, Parker-John, Centorame, Francis, Mešár, Xhekaj, Barron, and Guhle. 😉

Slafkovsky is a big boy. He should certainly excel at board battles and protecting the puck. Man, Xhekaj is built like a monster. Some of those poor kids in the OHL with their skinny teenage builds must have been terrified of him.
I had to google John Parker-Jones. He is a large human being. Can he skate? Is there any realistic chance he is a late bloomer?

I missed the first goal, but that was a nice shortie by Mesar.
Not a great look by the Habs goalie on Buffalo's second. Hopefully that was tipped because otherwise yikes.

Slaf looking ordinary. Finally made an interesting play on that last PP. started to go behind the net and had no real play but did a spinorama behind the net and slid it in front. Only problem was that no one read the play and no one was in front to tap it in.
Mesar looks good to me. Harris is clearly past this stage. Davidson is one of the unknowns who’s looks capable. Tourigny is interesting. Amazing skater.
Habs seem to have the puck a lot more than Buffalo. I only saw the last Buffalo gial but wonder if 3-2 is representative of the goaltending play.

That was a funny sequence. A resident goon (isn’t there always at least 1 on the other team?) lines up Slafkovky as he cuts to the middle. Nails him but its Berzolla (24 year old ECHL grad) who gets the worst of it. To ice the cake Xhekaj takes him on and lands a couple.
Slaf is a big body. Probably will take some time to get used to the big ice and to gain another step.

Quite funny too, seeing the clock keep running after the whistle, 10 seconds at one point and about another 5 at another. It was stop time was it not?

I skimmed through it on youtube... Mesar and Beck can roof the puck... the refs let them play...

Final was 4-3 Sabres. Not Vrbetic’s best game. Beck showing his speed and hands. Don’t sleep on Beck!

I cannot claim that I was closely watching every shift, but hey it is Habs hockey so I watched.
The boys looked pretty good. The forwards had jump and made some plays. I thought Slafkovsky was too cute at times but his size and ability to execute controlled zone entries are intriguing. Beck and Mesar looked the part. The team defense was not as disjointed as it could be almost a month before these kids are playing real games. Among the d-men, most had their ups and downs.
Vrbetic was not good, but he is just a kid playing a position that requires a long runway to refine and master. Buffalo got a couple more quality saves but that is hockey.
