Harris sure has been getting out of position a lot in the last few games. Rookies make mistakes. I am sure he will learn.

You see it so often. An opposing guy winds up, gaining speed and the player skating back with him waits a second before getting in gear himself. Thats too late, guy. You’re done like dinner.

Arber Xhekaj's goal is his 5th of the season. Ties him for 15th on the Habs rookie defenseman goal scoring list with
Frank Eddolls - 1944-45 Glen Harmon - 1942-43

Anderson. Therrien would have loved him. Chip and chase, rinse, repeat. The ideal Therrien guy playing for MSL. As they say on Sesame Street, “which of these things doesn’t belong here?”

It seriously reinforces how much potential there is to get better. Replacing 6 or 7 forwards is a huge change. When those forwards are contributing almost nothing, the jump should be gigantic.

I’m gobsmacked. We won in OT as I expected but what the Hell is Edmundson doing out there in OT? Hoffman does what he’s good at. Dach sets him up in space on a 3 on 2 and he picks a high corner. It’s literally the only thing he is good at. But there’s Edmundson, flying down the left wing to help create the odd man advantage. How does Marty make these inane things work?

Back to .500 hockey, the death zone. We were outplayed for large stretches of this game, the first time the Coyotes were favored in a game this season and the first time they hit 40 shots.
Hopefully we'll lose out the rest of this road trip and we can make a run at the top 5 picks. Bedard will be going to the Blackhawks at this rate

Harris is looking drained. there is no way these rookies can keep this pace going. Not only so many games, but way too many minutes. gotta give them a break so they play 2 games a week. Call someone guys up and let them play. If they stink out the joint, no biggie.

Dvo, wideman and drouin on the PP... Wideman & Drouin have 0 goals between them & we wonder why the PP is so awful. Why is it so difficult to put Guhle or X on the PP with Suze and Cole. Add Dach and put Slafs in front of the net and we may see the worst PP in the league improve. I think Marty is over thinking this. Put you best dman on the point on your #1 PP - basic hockey.

The Habs are the masters of OT shinny and shootouts, which is admittedly kind of fun. But I continue to see a team limping along a long road. Last night was emblematic of that. Arizona dominated the first period and if they had more quality NHL players they could have been up a couple of goals at the first intermission. The boys did improve in the second and third periods, though I do not see a recipe for any sort of consistent winning.
Basically St. Louis and Robidas have no choice but to play nearly everyone in the lineup one peg above where they truly belong. Take the defense, for example. Edmundson and the outstanding rookie Ghule could be a nice second pair but they are the best Montreal can put on the ice. Harris and Kovacevic are in way too deep as the second pairing. The truth is they would struggle a lot of nights as a third pair and on good NHL teams neither of them would crack a healthy lineup. Wideman is best suited for the pressbox or Laval.

no choice but to play nearly everyone in the lineup one peg above where they truly belong. Yes....one peg and, in some cases, two pegs. Such has been the case for the past decade....the only difference being primo-Price stealing points. Many of our Ws this year have occurred when Jake and Monty have stood on their heads.

Soooooo, I didn't see they game last night, but I'm reading that Slafkovskÿ suffered another hard hit. This time from Gothisbere.
Friedman, on Marek's show, says the word around the league is the young Slovak continually puts himself in vulnerable situations and players big and small are taking advantage when he is on the ice to take those hits, and nullify his size, because there is no push back from Slafkovskÿ.
Ummmm, tell me why we have Xhekaj again??

Ummmm, tell me why we have Xhekaj again?? Drouin went and spoke to Goths after the hit I'm not making that up. I'm sure it put the fear of God in the entire Yotes line-up. I don't know if you can teach someone to keep their head up without making them tentative and losing their feel for the game. I've been saying for some time now that tslafs is not ready and is going to get hurt. I wonder how much of this is a result of growing up in Slovakia on a larger ice surface with less physicality in the game.

I guess when you are always the biggest kid on the ice and you have more time and space, you can get away with bad habits more. I saw some early scouting reports on Slafkovsky and two of the knocks were he does not shoulder check enough to gather in his surroundings and it results in some poor decisions when better options exist if he had seen them (part of that hockey IQ/vision).
I know that Adam Nicolas has been working on him and others about shoulder checking and moving his head for both both safety and better decisions reasons, as some drills have been posted at times online.
Marty says he does not coach “one off” mistakes but he does try and correct ongoing trends. Keep working on this Marty, there is still work to be done. Slafkovsky is now in the league where he has the least amount of time and space he has ever encountered and most of his opponents are big and fast and play the game fast. Way less room for error in the NHL on this one. Another example of why the NHL is such a big step up from other levels of hockey. Bad habits tend to get punished.

I concur with the points you make, NW. I am sure he will learn and adapt, but right now Slafkovsky’s inability to recognize danger often puts him in danger. The Gostisbehere hit was clean so I did not think anyone necessarily needed to fight. But if I were behind the Habs bench, I would tell the boys okay then let’s kick it up a notch it’s time to lay the body.
Xhekaj’s play proves he is an NHL-caliber d-man, so that is why he is on the roster. Of course, fighting is also a useful tool to bring to the table. And Xhekaj has fought five times in like 30 or 31 games so that would put him on pace for 12 or 13 fights as a rookie. In this day and age, that is actually a lot. Basically for me two things need to happen here. First, Slafkovsky needs to be more alert. In the high-speed NHL, it does not matter if you are 1.93 m and 103 kg if you consistently lack awareness of where opponents are when you have the puck and in the second or two after the puck is gone. As NW said, one the shoulder check is one way to blunt potential hazards. Even though my son still has another year and a half to go until checking is permitted, I always remind him when he is on the boards waiting for the breakout play to keep a wide base and use his back end and hips to blunt the impact of anyone skating into his space.
Second, Montreal needs to develop that tough pack mentality where other teams know the Habs are going to play physical hockey and get after it. My sense is management wants to have a critical mass of players with size and physicality. And for me it is a good thing to have a couple of them be guys who are a little edgy and unpredictable.
