Losing assets for nothing is never a good business model However, we got some kids playing time. Ok. How many of those kids are actually apart of the teams immediate future? Not many We have SiX guys on injured reserve that will return next year. Show me where these kids make this team? The whole point to the season was to dump the players to make room for the kids (and the 2 hopeful high draft pick in such a strong draft year-I laugh at that, but I digress). If we ain’t dumping anyone, where is the room? Dadonov made room for Gurianov. Drouin, Monahan and Byron are as good as gone. My lineup for next season: Caufield-Suzuki-RHP Slafkovsky-Dach-Gurianov Anderson-Evans-Ylonen Hoffman-Dvorak-Gallagher Armia. The first two lines are here for the long-term, hopefully. The 3d line can stick around or be moved out, the 4th is ejectable. Barron-Matheson Savard-Guhle Harris-Kovacevic Xhekaj (Edmundson gets moved out over the summer, hopefully) Allen/Montembeault

Who are the Habs losing for nothing? Monahan already yielded a first rounder from Calgary. Sure, it would have been nice double dip but the guy's body is breaking down. It is what it is.
Edmundson is under contract. He is not a lost asset and for me there is likely no impediment to trading him in the summer. Drouin has been here six years with little to show for it, his expiring contract is a good thing so if management cannot get anything for him well after the first five years how many of us expected a different outcome.
I am not saying none of the kids could be moved strategically via trade if opportunity knocks, but how does getting serious NHL game reps for Guhle, Xhekaj, Harris, Barron, Kovacevic, Slafkovsky, Dach, Caufield, Harvey-Pinard, and Ylonen hurt the organization down the road?
The NHL is a league where contracts determine the value of players. So before the season even started guys like Gallagher, Hoffman, and Armia were widely acknowledged to be somewhere on the spectrum from 'hard to move' to 'impossible to move.'

I’m also not too sure they don’t resign Monahan Another issue with your line-up is there is no room for the supposed stars we draft at 7 and 11. (Great draft and all that). Also, no Beck? What about Roy? This is what I meant by we were suppose to dump Hoffman, Armia, Dvorak The season might not be a complete waste, but next year will be year 3 of cheering to lose … when does it end?

We can change the premise of the debate, but Tank Nation was all about losing and dumping players. If we are not dumping the players or losing them through sheer attrition, then the season was a bust. No one is saying getting 8 regulars ice time is bad. But getting UFA Belzile ice time is a nothing-burger (for example)

Well, I expect Beck and Roy to start the year in the AHL or Junior, both are still raw. If you wanted to suggest a kid should be making it up front next year, I'd have said I'd want to make room for Farrell. We could assume he takes Hoffman's spot a year later, Beck will make Evans expendable at the deadline if nothing else, though having a few too many options isn't often a problem, injuries always strike sooner or later. Pitlick ? His contract was basically designed to be waivable with no NHL cap penalty. Whoever we draft will hopefully spend a year in whichever league they are, getting stronger. I'd rather see us take our time for once, after rushing Galch, KK and Slaf. Gallagher, Hoffman and Armia weren't going anywhere, other than LTIR or moved for similar deals. Dvorak, I'm an advocate of moving ASAP if there's a solid offer.

But getting UFA Belzile ice time is a nothing-burger (for example) Ice time is an asset, since it can be used to develop/evaluate players, and I agree that a guy like Belzile (or Richard, for that matter) are essentially a waste of icetime... but what else are we going to do ? Call up guys who clearly aren't ready and indirectly make sure the AHL team doesn't make the playoffs either?

TSN host was asking Button what Toronto should be looking at to shore up their goaltending. He surprised me by mentioning Montembault.
Please, dont do anything to help the Leafs.😀

The kids have to see what effort looks like and if you take him out of the lineup, you're missing that guy that keeps the flame alive in the most difficult times. And if Belzile isn't playing on the 4th line, then do we put a kid there instead? There were a lot of complaints whenever Slaf was played in that position. Considering we're in a rebuild, I have tons of time for types like Belzile, Savard and Edmundson. Despite their mistakes or lack of skill, I really do think that they make our kids better AND make the room happier (local boy scores first NHL goal at 31 years old!). Savard especially has been terrific this year in a mentorship role. Matheson too has been great at always making himself an open option for whichever young D he has been paired with. They have been the quiet heros of the year for the support that they've been giving the rookies. Granted, no one has complained about Savard and Edmundson in this thread in particular, but I just see Belzile as a similar good veteran example but in the forward position. That's something that we've been missing since Monahan went down. We have too many Hoffman types at forward that could be destructive. They introduce bad concepts and habits to the kids.

Ditto! When I was reading your post Frozone, I was thinking, ya, but what about guys like Hoffman, who I see as most unhelpful on many levels. And then you closed with the banger. I have such little time for players who seem so entitled and seem so unwilling to learn to improve themselves, or hustle for their mates, or the fans. PK needs to give Hoffman a good talking to; not that there would be anyone listening.

Boston is making more moves today. Bertuzzi from Detroit and signing Pasta to 90 million, 8 yr contract...great player, but definitely no hometown discount.
This must be the most active trade deadline week ever. Never have I seen so many trades in a short period of time. It seems like everyone feels like they have a shot at winning this year. The East will be a blood bath.

Also Granlund to the Pens. I think he played against them last night. And Eller to the Avs.
I guess Detroit is packing it in after those losses to Ottawa. Thet got a 1st from Vancouver for Hronek. I know it was the Isles pick from the Horvat trade but why are they dealing 1st rounders?

Hall had suffered a recent lower-body injury, highlighting the Bruins' need to add to their forward depth. They also received $6 million in long-term injured reserve cap relief with the Hall move, according to CapFriendly, using $2.375 million of it on the Bertuzzi trade.Gotta give Sweeney credit for doing all within his power to maintain the Bruins' strength to counteract the injury bug. I have to admit that, other than Marchand's nonsense, this is the most likeable/palatable elite Bruins' team in my lifetime. When Marchand sticks to hockey, I find them very entertaining.

I'm predicting HuGo will be active tomorrow. Given the league frenzy this week, it would be a shame if we can't cash in. I think/hope they've been holding out to see best offers.
And no doubt Eddy playing will get some interest as he's back in the line-up and he ain't a rental as he has a reasonable cap hit for one more year.
And HuGo must be trying to peddle Hoffman having him on Suze's line against Kings. That backfired as the line was not very good and Hoffman coughed up the puck on the winning goal.
Sure hope Andy stays as he's been playing some good hockey and is entering his prime with reasonable cap hit. Unless it's a spectacular return: first rounder and top prospect and then some.

I disagree. I don't see him being active at all. No one will give anything up for Drouin, Hoffman and Monahan that makes sense, even with 50% retained. He needs to keep some players to field a team on the ice. The win will be the cap space gained at the end of the year.

After all the big trades in recent days, it has been a quiet morning on deadline day.
I thought Edmundson looked good enough last night. He played over 16 minutes, had 4 hits, and was not a minus on a night where the team lost. Whether a one game sample size is enough to make GMs feel relatively okay that his back issues are behind him is another question altogether.
Hoffman would have been moveable on an expiring contract. But Hughes is not chewing on money this year and next year for a meh pick.
I suppose if Drouin cannot even be moved for a mid to late round pick then that speaks volumes about how he is regarded by teams around the league.

Everyone including him knew he was in the line up last night for one last audition for other gms. Wonder what's going through a guy's mind. Perhaps he's hoping to get on a team with a great shot at the Cup. But the issue is his injury and whether it will linger. I don't think any gm has any doubt that he can help a Cup contender - his record is very strong. And he's got a good contract - he's not a rental. So are gms wanting full disclosure on the injury, including doctor's reports? Can't see any gm giving up much for Hoffman. He is soft and not a playoff performer. He's a one dimensional player, and even that he doesn't do that well anymore; shoot on net. He must be up there for forwards on give aways, turnovers, and loss of possession - he usually has 2 turnovers per PP. We're stuck with him for another year Assuming a gm wanted to take a flyer on Drouin, we ain't getting much. My biggest concern is we resign him for a couple of million at the end of the season. Hopefully HuGo knows not to go there. He is simply not in our future. I'm sure they'd love him in Switzerland

They have been injury free all year so Hall and Foligno are just the tip of the pendulum iceberg as it tips back. I pray they don’t win it this year because the cliff beckons starting next season. Bruins will always be public enemy #1 to me.

Habs retain as a 3d party broker in the Bonino deal.
We get a 5th.
Strongly hints we won't be doing much otherwise... if there were multiple irons in the fire, we wouldn't see a retention slot used just to get a 5th rounder.

And they also get Engström’s teammate too in the salary retention deal. He is unsigned, so does not count as a contract spot with them at 47 of 50.
