The draft "experts" are now comparing Michkov to Kovalev. However, they weren't that flattering in comparing him to Kovalev....lots of skill and hockey sense, but may have some attitude issues. If he has anywhere near the skills of Kovalev, then it's a no brainer to grab him at 5.

But if Michkov is the real deal we may have some regrets. Huge. All this moving and shaking obscures the fact that we may not draft this high again for another 10 years. Elite talent doesn't come around very often and we've had bad luck when we have picked near the top (Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi both #3 picks in not great draft years, Slaf a true project of a #1 pick in another seemingly weak draft, but Slaf has real downside potential). Here you have a consensus stud, admittedly with some question marks, and it seems the most likely outcome is we pass on him or trade down. Everyone will praise HuGo for being savvy - trading down from 5 and picking up an extra pick, but you typically judge a trade by who got the best player in the deal. It will take 5 years to make that assessment. As esteemed poster Doc Holiday (where are you?) used to say: horses not ponies. For a franchise that has been starved for elite talent for literally decades, I'm terrified that we will pass on this kid for the sake of adding more "depth" to the development pipeline, more darts for the board, more assets to manage. All that makes sense, but there's just no substitute for talent. I really hope he goes ahead of us so I don't need to be filled with dread for the next 5 years.

Hope Michkov is picked in top 4 (SJ) as the others ranked in the top 5 are all very good players. I'd be very happy with Smith.

FWIW, in last years poll for who Habs would pick with #1 pick, of 27 votes, 25 said Wright and 2 said Slafs. 40% are currently saying Michkov. Let's see if Hugo is listening this year. Of course, 60% are saying someone other than Michkov.

Another phrase he used that I liked a lot was " battleships, not row boats". Same idea . No substitute for quality.

Right now, I figure Bedard and Michkov go in the top 5, and so one of Carlsson, Smith and Fantili falls to us. I do think a deal will be set up to trade down should Michkov slip to 5, and that deal will public in a few years. Yup. I think it will be with Philly and it will be #5 for numbers 7 and 22. Briere may want to make a splash and getting a potential superstar is quite the splash. Philly is in a full rebuild so waiting 3 years for Michkov is not a problem. If that goes through we get either Leonard or Reinbacher (who we likely would have taken at 5), plus another pick at 22. If Michkov gets taken earlier, by Anaheim or SJ, then we'll get either Smith or Carlsson. I would be thrilled with Carlsson and pretty happy with Smith. If we trade down, I see us taking Dvorsky

That would explain givig up the 31 and 37 overall for Newhook. Looking at all the talking head "mock drafts", there does not seem to be much of a consensus on the #5 through 8 picks. I've seen us get Benson, Dvorsky, Leonard as well as Reinbacher. So if we get any of those plus a 22nd overall in deep draft would work. But if Michkov is the real deal we may have some regrets. I hear lots of pundits call this a deep draft. I think a few years from now we won’t think of it as so deep. I seen this rodeo too many times. A draft gets classified as deep. Teams trade down. 5 years later fans complaining about drafting high in weak drafts … but at the time it was called deep.

I think it's deep in that there's a strong top-15 or so, but I doubt there is a big difference in the later rounds... It's just too unlikely, statistically.

All that makes sense, but there's just no substitute for talent. I really hope he goes ahead of us so I don't need to be filled with dread for the next 5 years. All true. I get the feeling that the decision has already been made to pass on Michkov. That's why there is so much activity (if Seravelli is right) around the Habs and that pick. I've moved on, not because I doubt Michkov who is simply a brutally natural scorer, but because the Habs prefer size and along with the 'Russian risks' factor, are looking at other options. If they were to select Reinbacher or Leonard, yes, they are dropping a tier and giving up on 'elite' talent, unless those two surprise, but their ceiling is pretty good anyway. Leonard (my choice) is a play driver and scores big goals. That's important to me. I lost any interest in Oliver Wahlstrom years ago because every time the US team needed a big goal and he was in a position to provide it, he choked. Some of those opportunities weren't that tough, either. Leonard is the opposite. So maybe not elite, but a dangerous guy, nonetheless. If we get Leonard and pick 22, it could be the best package, given the earlier decision that Michkov posed too much risk. I wonder how the interview went? We need someone from inside the room to spill the beans.

Don't mind me, I'm still not over the 2013 draft. We were a first place team. Going into the playoffs we could have bolstered the offense a little and went for it. But at the trade deadline, Habs management decided that all they would add was Davis Drewiski, and not trade any of their draft picks (we had a first and 3 second round picks). It was hailed as a deep draft and finally Timmins has some draft capital .... Jagr was available for next to nothing .... Then we lose to Ottawa in the first round 4 games to 1, scoring 9 goals in 5 games. And to and salt to a festering wound we ended up drafting Mike McCarron, Zach Fucale, Jacob De La Rose and Arturri Lehkonen instead of trying to give the team a boost. I didn't want to hear about "deep drafts" ever again ... 🤮🤮

I'd rather as well. Foerster is more developed and has already shown scoring ability in the AHL and NHL. Good ppg in the NHL, but those could have been late in the season and those can be easier points on a losing team. Everyone under rates you.

My question now is.... what's the over/under on pick #5 being announced (or traded)?
8PM?

My question now is.... what's the over/under on pick #5 being announced (or traded)? 8PM? ZERO TO NONE...simply because nobody trusts each other to pick on who they say they would pick. What if Fantilli drops to 5? I absolutely do NOT want to trade him because he may be a franchise Center. If we had 1OA and wanted to do a Lindros level trade, then I say we could announce before 7. BTW, is the first draft start at 7 or 8?

Hughes gets asked for an example of one of the hard questions the Habs ask in the interview sessions
Hughes : Ahhh, well, one is, I ask, if you are at war, and there is a submarine, and it's the enemy submarine, your friends are there, and the sub had killed your friends, like would you shoot it
WT actually F .... why don't you just friggin ask, if a teammates gets suckered are you going to go in the scrum and stand up for him ....
These are the questions deciding who they draft? I might just get up and walk out and say, I'll see you at my Stanley Cup party juice-****
