Just checking out the picks. Our last pick, Rasmus Bergqvist is listed at 5'6", 128 lbs. I hope those are typos because this is a guy who Hutson would tower over and knock over with a puff of air. But maybe his dad is 6'6", 230 lbs.

The Development Camp started today with off ice stuff and will run until Friday with daily on ice sessions. Here is the roster of participants including 7 of the 10 kids drafted. Only Demidov, Khanin and Koivu are missing camp. Some interesting invites include Zetterberg, Nadeau and Dell’Elce. The latter was at camp last season and was impressive. They are all NCAA guys though, so the Habs are just keeping a much closer look at them.

He was Sweden’s best player at the U18 but was a no draft for me due to his small size. Apparently 32 NHL teams felt the same way. He is off to the NCAA in the fall, so they Habs cannot sign him even if they like him without him losing his college eligibility.

Why can't they be trash talker like the NBA.
"Do you think you are going to be better then your brother?"
Little X..."Better? In a few years, you wont remember his name. His talent can't even match my ass pimple".

I wonder how much they feed of each other? I had a 16 year old nephew who was in wrestling. I was 19 but he was so competitive he had to outdo me in weights. I can imagine the same level of crazy between the brothers. They have the same height so they probably top out within 20 pounds of each other.

Video of today's scrimmage... Hage and Little X did well

Video of today's scrimmage... Hage and Little X did well I watched both “periods” of the scrimmage yesterday morning. Yes, I have a problem 😆. I am still a draft and prospect geek to the core. My observations on a few of the kids, with all the usual caveats: it is July hockey, the scrimmage was 4 on 4 pond hockey, and the defense depth at this camp was very weak, so the forwards had a field day. Hage - the star of the show, but not surprising as the only first rounder there. Great skater with silly mitts and moves. Will need to get stronger but headed to a great program at Michigan and will get lots of off ice time to work in the gym. Xhekaj - not this year’s pick of course, but he keeps getting better and better. When he adds some more beef to his already tall frame, look out. Good mobility and some skills there too. Nadeau - the best of the invites. Skilled and talented, but very small. You can see how he put up good numbers at U of Maine last season. A possible free agent down the road for at least a minor pro spot IMO. Thorpe - he is very big already and can move pretty well for a big lug. He has a very good shot and likes to use it. Keep an eye on him in Vancouver next season and he could have a pretty good year. Protz - the most amazing interview at the camp. This kid is an old soul, and is very fun to listen too. He is built like a truck too, so his strength will not really shine in a shinny scrimmage, but you see the mobility and good angles he has, and how well he engages on the wall. He will be a big minute munching leader for Brantford next season. Sawyer - you can see the raw skills are there, but he also has a very skinny frame and needs to improve his skating, especially in his acceleration. That should get better with strength and growing into his body. He needs a longer runway, but one to keep an eye on to see how he progresses. Eriksson - one of my favourite sleeper prospects. He is quicker and stronger than last year, and did okay but did not stand out too much in the scrimmage. Beck - was injured on the boards in the first scrimmage, so they kept him out of the second one. He had one heckuva long season, so just him being here as a young leader for others is a win for me. Harris - popped a few goals in the second scrimmage doing what he did do well winning a NCAA championship in Denver: going to the net or right spots to get good chances. You can see he processes the game quite well. I will have to pay a bit more attention to him this year. The goalies - all let in goals and made some good saves. There was not much defensive help in front of them in the scrimmages, especially in the second one when Team White was also without Beck up front.

I was wondering why Team Red seemed to have all the good players, but Beck's injury explains that. The Sick Podcast had Stu Cowan on it and he said that when seeing Beck out of uniform, he looked really big and strong. Cowan said that in Beck's first camp, that was definitely not the case. Beck was about 6', 180 lbs and now he's up to 195. I would have paid more attention to Ericksson as I think he's a sleeper, but all the new kids with unfamiliar numbers made it hard to keep track of anyone. Hage wearing 88 was easier. There's only one camera angle etc. etc.

Watching these scrimmages with so many new kids and so many weird numbers is quite hard to try and focus on too many guys. I did my best to shift focus every now and then depending who was on the ice, but I had written some of the jersey numbers down so I could pick out the guys quicker. It is still nowhere as good as watching a game to focus on one, or maybe two, guys.
I sort of get their Day 2 of the draft strategy. Similar to some of the later rounds in their two previous drafts, they pick some guys with at least one desirable trait (size, shot, skill, drive, etc.) and in which they have a decent runway (Euro or college guys that don’t need to be signed in two years) to develop and round out skills. They also go after highly driven kids and those who were later bloomers or had much stronger later halves of their seasons and may have slipped a bit in rankings/viewings as a result. I have a better understanding of some of the rest of the Day 2 guys other than Koivu (a bit of a known commodity), so I actually have a bit more hope for some of the lesser known guys now and look forward to seeing if they can grow into their game over the next 2-5 years.

Protz apparently likes violence. A lot of violence. He likes to hurt people.
I like him.
