Had to tape the game, so watched it late, and am still watching the third but can't help myself from chiming in.
If David Savard never played another game for us, I wouldn't complain in the least. It almost physically hurts to watch him struggle to get to any puck. It's like he's skating in mud. If we can get anything in the first 100 picks for him, I'm pulling the trigger. It seems like a constant re-run. The other team scores....I look at the replay and there's Savard, providing a great screen for the other team on our goalie. One of the great mysteries of life is how he can be seen fishing the puck out of his net without his +/- being -120 for the year.
But it's not all his fault. He has to play on the first pairing and he has to play with Matheson. Matheson is such a great skater, such a slow learner. Matheson has the puck along the boards beneath the icing line, and he can give a soft pass to Savard but instead makes it too hard (you can't count on cement hands to receive anything but an exquisite pass) and it goes around the boards to a Ranger. Contrast that with Struble. He has the puck at the left point along the boards, gets pressured and instead of just ramming the puck down the left boards (as Matheson and 95% of the other Dmen in the NHL would have done) he lifts a soft pass to Suzuki who backhands it around the boards, Armia gets it and the play goes to Pezzetti, Stephens, Armia and into the net. No points for Struble, but if he doesn't make that pass and the Habs keep possession, that goal doesn't get scored. Sigh.
Though I've been ragging on Savard, my normal target is my whipping boy, Josh Anderson. My description of his play is that no one else does 'NOTHING' with as much flair as Josh Anderson. He looks like Superman but produces like Clark Kent.
I'll finish on a positive note. I liked the third line with Ylonen and Heineman. Big, with fast wings and decent production. There's more skill than we think on that line.

I ranted about Matheson well before the end of the game, which was a fortunate thing for him or his eardrums would have imploded even from 3,000 miles away. What an effing idiot. Slaf does a great job ( in his 10 seconds of OT time) to steal the puck and draw a penalty, and Matheson decides to let the Rangers have TWO outstanding chances to score while shorthanded! It’s no wonder he’s in my top 3 to trade list. No matter what he brings on the offensive end, he destroys it all with these catastrophic plays he REGULARLY makes.
Thank god Cole solved Quick. I

Matheson did his best to give the game away. Hope he's buying Monty beers tonight He hardly ever looks to the off wing (where Slaf usually is) and only passes to Caufield. Teams are starting to cheat on it and Matheson is not adjusting. Up to that point, he had a decent game

He looks like Superman but produces like Clark Kent. That's kind of how i feel about Slafkovsky. Great hands, nice speed, strong on the puck and forecheck, makes a great moves and ..... can't finish If he scored tonight on that play where dipsy doodled around two Rangers and cut to the net all alone , the roof would have come off the Bell Center and it would have been on every highlight package for 20 years. But he took too long to shoot or dekeand had it stripped. Game 39 was just played 2022-23 ... 39 GP 4G 6A 2023-24 ... 39 GP 4G 10A It's time for Slaf to have a consistent break out. It's encouraging to see Slaf has 7 points in his last 10 games. But that's also half of his production this year. He needs to be consistent with his production from this point forward like all those power forwards people were comparing him too earlier in the year

I haven't done this in two weeks
Caufield is now on pace for 23 goals
Seeing him miss the net completely tonight from the slot with not a soul around him, i started to wonder if this is the real Cole Caufield. I know some are pointing to his surgery but the shot he took in the slot and the shot he took in the shootout had plenty of zip on it. Maybe he isn't a 40 goal scorer
*edit - it the last 7 weeks, Caufield's pace has not been greater than 24 goals*

Anderson hasn’t gotten any better than his 24 year old season in 2018/19 and it can be argued he’s regressed. When Anderson touches the puck, the play dies. When Slaf touches it a lot of good things happen. There’s a world of difference between the two.

When Slaf touches it a lot of good things happen. There’s a world of difference between the two. I agree with most of what you are saying. Slaf is better and Slaf makes good things happen, as evident in his xG% numbers. But games aren't won based on shot quality Another difference is expectations. What do people expect from a fourth round pick? What do people expect from a 1OA pick? People tend to forget that Josh Anderson was a 4th round draft pick. But I'm not trying to bash Slaf or pump Josh. I'm just tracking Slaf's progress based on all those comparable earlier in the year. Some (not all) bigger/power forwards do start slow, i conceded that point to people. But the names mentioned, all had one thing in common - they start to produce at a high clip around game 80 of their NHL careers. Slaf is on track if his current 7 point pace in 10 games continues. If it does not, those comparables die. I'm looking for Slaf to score 25-30 points in his last 40 games of this season. Now, if he does, then next year the training wheels come off and he has to score 60 points **EDIT - another concession would be that Habs management got it wright in regards to Shane.

Last year he had 26 goals in 46 games- a mid 40s pace. And he was playing with a bad shoulder. And if my math is right, his career stats before this season began averaged out to a 35 goal season. ( 53 goals in 123 games). Unusual things I've noticed is that this season he has more assists than goals and is only a - 2. Is the team forcing him to be more responsible defensively? I'm not making excuses here because I share your concerns. The team went all in with him on his contract & now we all have to hold our breath. Is this just an off season or the real Caufield?

Or is he being overcoached and hesitating because they want him to play the dreaded 200ft game... he's a shooter ffs, let him use his instincts... You notice how easily he scored that goal in the shootout, that's a snipers goal... why was it easy? Because he didn't have to worry about a 200 foot game, he let his instincts take over... he didnt look very happy when he scored did he.
