Hockey is debatable, but I actually believe Hutson and Mailloux at his stage of their NHL careers are not ready to be more than third pair types who gets their minutes and usage managed. And in an ideal world, again my opinion, it would be easier to be breaking one of them into the NHL while the other was learning the do/do not of pro hockey in Laval.
If Hutson and Mailloux are going to be in Montreal as rookies simultaneously, then I would put Mailloux with Guhle (I see them as the future first pair anyway) on a second pair, while going with the vets Matheson and Savard together to stabilize the alarming situation that could spiral out of control because it is already in dangerous territory. And then basically I would rotate the others on the third pair (and maybe even the send one of the waiver exempt kids down.

And then basically I would rotate the others on the third pair (and maybe even the send one of the waiver exempt kids down. Both are mistake machines. I actually misread Mailmans number as 94 so when I was looking at the simulations, I didn't see his number anywhere getting scored on and had a mile wide smile. Couldn't believe it...then I saw his number was 24. I ABSOLUTELY agree about Guhle and Mailman. If they believe they are long term partners then they will are going to mesh and bring it to another level. I can see Mailman learning defense and work ethic from Guhle and I can see Guhle offense go to a completely different level paired with an offensive dynamo. I can see this happening in a dozen or two games...and for the next decade. If we dream enough, we can see a top 5 NHL pairing in a few years. Does Marty have our brilliant, analytical, uniquely gifted minds? (Or is it a sugar highs?) And Matheson with Savard work, but it's going to cost Matheson a bit of offense. Savard is a defensive monster and very disturbing going on offense. Hutson with Barron is going to be a disaster. So will any combo with anybody but Guhle. I can't see Hutson more then a PP specialist and playing ultra protected minutes. Hutson is cheating in the corners, no suprise, plus he simply doesn't have the speed to make up his mistakes. There is no question whatsoever that he sees the game at a different level, but as much as he is 12 out of 10 on offense, he's a solid 3 of 10 on defensive ability. Maybe the only natural partner to keep Hutson alive is X, but then X is the slowest processing defenseman. Atari say hello to a supercomputer. It could work if those two communicate enough to cover each other's shortcomings. Yes, lots of hope there...

If Hughes and St. Louis are fretful about sending Hutson to the AHL, maybe they should send Struble down for a couple months with the mandate that he plays his off-side in Laval to get ready for where opportunities are likely to arise in Montreal for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. In that scenario, then until Christmas the third pair rotation could be Hutson, Barron, and Xhekaj. I would give them an equal share of games unless one or two guys separate and prove they are more NHL-capable.

Barron can't cover Hutson. Nor protect him when someone like Trouba takes a run at him.
It has to be X even if that pair is the second coming of the Two Muskateers defensivly. Although I'm intrigued to see if X rediscovery that he has a 107mph shots in his baffled bag.
I will also argue that Marty has distributed those various sized baffled bags with his current rendition of "Guess My System".

Hutson is being given a long, long leash because management sees him as a game breaker (I agree). I think they're willing to put up with all kinds of mistakes this year, to give him all the experience he can absorb. Ergo, it probably doesn't matter who he plays with. If Reinbacher was healthy, he's the type of D who could complement Hutson well. For now, Cranky is right and Guhle is the guy, playing on the right side. I have a higher opinion of Struble than most. I think he should be playing regularly, probably with Savard. That leaves Matheson with someone. Either Mailloux or Barron. Probably Barron as Mailloux doesn't require waivers. LM then goes to Laval to play big minutes.
There, that's my Master Plan. Forwards to come later, if they can get healthy.

Brace gone and healed are long distance friends.
Worse nightmare is for him to come back too early and destroy that knee. We had a similar story with a goaltender whose name had religious meaning...and now on extended, very well paid vacation.
I love to get him back tomorrow, but since Santa and i are drinking buddies, i see him as a Xmas present.

He later tweeted that the big brace is gone, but Laine confirmed he is wearing a smaller brace underneath his pants

He later tweeted that the big brace is gone, but Laine confirmed he is wearing a smaller brace underneath his pants I would imagine that when he is ready to play that he'll still be wearing a brace while playing.

I'm keeping my hopium barrel in the warehouse until i see him do full suicides on that knee.
I hope he doesn't come back as a "statement" and get re-injured.

Worse, he could come back and play like Dach because he doesn't trust the knee.

Worse, he could come back and play like Dach because he doesn't trust the knee. Laine plays like ChicagoDach even when at 100% He just gets into better positions to shoot
