There's something Mario said that really intrigued me Thursday. He said:"we play a defensive system, because thats what everyone does in the league and thats how teams win."
We'll this is quite contradictory and I wonder if in fact we might not see an opposite trend develop. Of course for the next few years it'll be awfull hockey but I seriously think it might get better. If everyone uses defense, theres no reason to actually use defense since weak teams will lose, its kinda like all those bikers who use steroids, if they all use it, won't the best one win?
Not to mention all the new young stars under 25 that are coming, including Ovechkin and Crosby who will obviously refuse to play defense first. Add the fact that a lot "defensive" players are old ones that have to play like that to keep their career alive, they'll most likely be gone after the CBA. I seriously think hockey will come out of the CBA very different and not only on an economic point of view.

I don't think that we'll see a return of end to end, offense first, firewagon hockey. There is too much preparation/coaching for that to become the norm again, but we may see more goal scoring.
I think what we will find happening is the younger guys will be better able to put up points while playing within the constraints of a defense first system. Its been about 10 years since the nhl became a truly defense first league and the techniques used have been filtering down to the lower levels of hockey ever since. The guys coming up are familar with it. They may not be experts yet, but they have an idea of how to be effective within these systems. Also most of these guys have been shooting at Patrick Roy clones most of their hockey lives. That can't hurt either.
It wouldn't surprise me if there was a large turnover rate in the nhl over the next few years. I think theres going to be a lot of new faces, much more than usual.

Why can't the Hossa brothers be more alike? Why are we upset when Ward plays with the kind of enthusiasm that a lot of others in the sweater should play with? Why is Komisarek in Hamilton? Why is Hainsey on the bench? Why is Bob Gainey so much more knowledgeable about hockey than I am? (actually I know that one) Why do Rejean Houle and Mario Tremblay know so much less about hockey than I do? (combined)
