Didn't the Avs pass on him in the waiver draft at the start of the season?
In any case it wouldn't be a smart move by Lacroix to pass on him a second time.

It is conventional wisdom that apparently holds Colorado needs a strong goalie because they are risking everything using Aebischer.
David Aebischer's stats:
19GP 13W 4L 1T 2.28GAA .919SV% 2SO
Projection:
65GP 44W 14L 3T 2.28GAA .919SV% 7SO
Curtis Joseph's stats (albeit limited):
5GP 2W 3L 0T 3.13GAA .885SV% 1SO
Last year (with Detroit!):
61GP 34W 19L 6T 2.49GAA .912SV% 5SO
So why is everyone assuming Pierre Lacroix needs[/b] to pick up Curtis Joseph and his $8 million salary, when the statistics would suggest his current goaltender will outperform the expensive Curtis?
Conventional wisdom is way, way overrated, it appears.

Ken Holland probably didn't expect strong goaltending performances in Colorado or St. Louis. What are his options now... the Rangers? It seems like everyone wants to unload the overpaid veterans on Glen Sather. Why should Holland be any different?

Heck, Roman Cechmanek always has decent reg. season stats, but that doesn't mean that I would take him over Joseph in the playoffs. Aebischer has never started an NHL playoff game. With all the talent that Lacroix has assembled, it would be a shame for the Avs to suffer an early playoff exit because Lacroix was too cheap to swing for CuJo. Now that doesn't mean that the Avs are guaranteed to get to the Finals with Joseph, (the Red Wings sure didn't last year), but if you were a GM who would you rather have in net?

Still, Cujo's playoff record is nothing to write home about, either. A 1st round wonder and little more... Well, I'd ask as a coach. A GM is responsible for the long-term health of a franchise, and having a long-term ageing goalie making major cash is something no GM will be anxious to get into.

Still, Cujo's playoff record is nothing to write home about, either. A 1st round wonder and little more... True enough that his recent playoff record is nothing to write about, but he has gotten to the Conference Finals twice with the Leafs not to mention upset wins over Dallas and Colorado while he was with the Oilers. You can't blame last year's loss to the Ducks on him when the whole team was drawing blanks on offense. With CuJo atleast there's something to write about. List me David Aebischer's playoff achievements. The Avs are a team that was built to win this season. Kariya and Selanne might sign with another team in the summer, Forsberg might retire after this season and players like Sakic and Foote are past their prime. I am just saying that with a team that is so loaded in every area except goal, it seems a little suspect to go into the playoffs with so many question marks between the pipes. After this season, the team taking Joseph is on the hook for one more year of his contract. Hardly what I'd call a long-term problem. Besides the Avs saved $10M this season with the retirement of Roy.

There's time for Lacroix to act on the goalie situation. In the months ahead other goaltenders just as good as CuJo might become available, and they wouldn't have his contract as a millstone.

With CuJo atleast there's something to write about. List me David Aebischer's playoff achievements. In the only major playoff action of his career, in 1999-2000, he posted these stats in the regular season: 58GP 29W 22L 3T 3.33GAA .902SV% And these in the playoffs: 14GP 7W 6L 0T 3.05GA .917SV% In a much smaller sample, 1998-99, these were his regular season statistics: 38GP 17W 10L 5T 2.45GAA .920SV% And these were his playoff stats that season: 3GP 1W 2L 0T 2.37GAA .925SV% So he has a history of performing better in the playoffs than in the regular season. I mean honestly, if you guys were a GM, you would pick up a 36 year-old making $8 million and not at the peak of his career over a guy that's 25 years-old and peaking at the right time to perhaps lead his team somewhere special? I guess people were skeptical about Patrick Roy in 1986. Or Dryden in '71. Just because you've never been there doesn't mean you are automatically destined for failure, and you should maximize your chances by choosing the best performer now. Regarding Roman Chechmanek, I believe some are falling for whatever Bobby (Mr. Insane) Clarke spews. The guy was blamed for Philadelphia's shortcomings just like his predecessors. I predict more of the same this season. 2001-02 Regular season: 46GP 2.05GAA 24W 13L 6T .921SV% 2001-02 Playoffs: 4GP 1.86 GAA 1W 3L .936SV% 2002-03 Regular season: 58GP 1.83GAA 33W 15L 10T .925SV% 2002-03 Playoffs: 13GP 2.15GAA 6W 6L .909SV% Member of Czech Elite League Championship Teams 1995, '96, '97, '98, '99. Member of Czech World Championship Teams 1996, '99, 2000. Winner, best Czech Goaltender, Czech Elite League, 1995, '96, '97, '98, '99, 2000. Even taking into account the odd bad goal I think he was given the short end of the stick during his time in Philly. I forsee a better playoff run for him in LA this coming spring.

I agree that Colorado should stay the course. Maybe reevaluate the situation later in the season.
As for Cujo, I don't think he will be going anywhere, unless its in a trade that see Detroit picking up a portion of his salary. If he does clear waivers, then a deal will be sought out to move him quickly, that will include a decent percentage of his salary being paid by Detroit.

Heck, Roman Cechmanek always has decent reg. season stats, but that doesn't mean that I would take him over Joseph in the playoffs. Smart man!! ;D Aebischer has never started an NHL playoff game. With all the talent that Lacroix has assembled, it would be a shame for the Avs to suffer an early playoff exit because Lacroix was too cheap to swing for CuJo. True, but Aebischer has to start somewhere. All goaltenders, even the good ones, had to start a Playoff game without any experience. Patrick endorsed David to take his place. That has to count for something. Yeah I know some of you don't like Roy anymore, but he is one of the best goaltenders the NHL had, so as far as I am concerned, I would trust his word. Now that doesn't mean that the Avs are guaranteed to get to the Finals with Joseph, (the Red Wings sure didn't last year), but if you were a GM who would you rather have in net? Very true. But last year shouldn't be blamed totally on Cujo. It was the whole team that broke down and they used him as the team scapegoat. Cujo couldn't do it all by himself. They unfairly blamed him for the entire thing. That's wrong. It was lack of team effort that got them bounced out. On the other hand, Cujo has never taken any of his teams to the Finals. I am of the strong opinion that in spite of Cujo being a good goalie, he isn't a Cup Caliber Goalie. I don't think he will take any team to the Cup.

It's the same case I try to make on this board with Garon. Give him a chance at no. 1 before you doubt whether or not he's no. 1 material. My point was just that with such a superstar lineup, why would Colorado want to go with an unknown in net for the playoffs. But Aebischer's strong play as of late is proving all of his doubters, (including myself) wrong. As for Patrick endorsing Aebischer, I don't really put too much stock into that. After his retirement, if people ask him if Aebischer can do the job, I doubt that Roy would say "no, he can't handle it." The gracious thing to say, whether he believes it or not, is "David's ready. He's a good goalie. Blah, blah, blah..." Haven't seen you around these parts in a while Pam. Good to see you back posting.
