I know, I know...another thread about the Leafs...but like I said before, there's no one else around to complain to...I'm surrounded by (and work with) Leafs fans. Actually I do some contract work with MOJO Radio...the Home of the Leafs. So I have to bite my tongue all the time. Anyway...my point....why does Gary Roberts continue to get away with what I call punch-checking? I've always admired his hustle and power...but since the first Vancouver game he's been going into people along the boards and his gloves are usually up around the head. Last year, they called it....this year, they're not. In fact, it was speculated on MOJO of all places, that perhaps a reason the Leafs have gone on such a hot streak is because they're NOT being called nearly as much for all their crap. EDIT: Wednesday, Jan 7. Just saw highlights of the game against the Preds last night, and Roberts DID get called for his antics.....2 for elbowing, 2 for high-sticking, 2 for roughing (which was another punch-check...finally), and 2 for unsportsmanlike conduct. He was screaming at the official after the roughing call...one of the toughest players, but also quite possibly the biggest whiner out there. Can't wait to see how he "turns it up" for the playoffs. Hopefully, the refs continue to call him now and give him the extra 2 for his mouth.

He did get some payback when he nailed Kaberle. Kaberle is now out with a shoulder injury.
CH, how do you stand it at MOJO? I'd only be there 5 minutes before I was arguing with somebody.

I remember Roberts' hit from behind charging penalty on Kenny Jonsson against the Islanders in the playoffs. That was the nastiest hit I've ever seen.

Yep, not a class act. But if you want to beat the Leafs, you better beat him.

CH, how do you stand it at MOJO? I'd only be there 5 minutes before I was arguing with somebody. I don't work with the "Leafs'" guys...the other hosts may be Leafs' fans, but they don't rub anything in anyone's face. In fact, it's as if they've seen it all before...the hype, the bull, etc....so they're biding their bragging rights til such a time that the Leafs actually win it all. They've been let down for too long. I've met Bill Watters and he's a real nice guy, who knows his hockey and pulls no punches. He's like a Don Cherry with reality-based opinions. Back to Roberts' play...how about this analogy? With the acquisition of Marchment and Perrott....in my opinion the Leafs have built a mid-70's Philadelphia Flyer team...a mix of great skill and blatant intimidation. Saleski, Schultz, Dupont, Kelly, Clarke, and Dornhoefer compare very well with Domi, Tucker, Belak, McCabe, Roberts, Marchment, and Perrot. Leach, Barber, MacLeish, and of course Clarke who led the team in scoring compare quite nicely with Sundin, Nolan, Mogilny, and Nieuwendyk. Belfour reminds me of Bernie Parent at times too. Even though those Flyers won two consecutive Cups...I don't think that will happen to the Leafs anytime soon. The Leafs are an older bunch and more susceptible to injury playing that way. My 2 cents.

The Leafs are an older bunch and more susceptible to injury playing that way. My 2 cents. I agree with you here and have heard this mentioned before by announcers on the FAN. ( they seem to have a thing going with MOJO - - if you flip back & forth you here them talking about each other). I particulatly wonder about Belfour. He's the oldest goalie in the league & will be 39 when the playoffs start. I remember posting something about goalie's ages about a year ago but I can't find it. ( help anybody?) I believe no team has won with a goalie over 34-35 since the six team era. The long season and the four rounds of playoffs are a grind , especially for a goaltender and I think it showed with Belfour last year.

And further to my Leafs/70's Flyers comparison: My memory just clicked into two years ago when the Leafs "heart and grit" was paying off in spades over the Islanders and Senators...on radio, Joe Bowen started referring to them as the "Bay Street Bullies". What a double-standard...I remember Toronto fans and media complaining about the 70's Flyers' tactics when they eliminated the Leafs three consecutive years (74/75, 75/76, and 76/77)....and now they're applauding the same type of play.

I,m really glad to see the Senators bring them down to earth with a thud.
However, I'm sure their announcers won't talk much about the game but about Alfredsson and his fake throw of his broken stick. A side issue like that deflects coverage away from the real issues.

Got bored with the Habs game....tuned into the massacre at the ACC...much more enjoyable.
Now listening to "After the Horn" on MOJO.... All I'm hearing is excuses, excuses, excuses from the fans.
But, Domi said, "No excuses." Good for him.
Glenn Healey sounds like the Albert Einstein of hockey tonight. Everything he's saying is right on. "After getting the big lead, they played everyone and shared the ice time evenly; as a result the Senators had trouble with flow and getting their legs moving in the second period....they were thinking ahead to Buffalo tomorrow night."
Again Roberts and Tucker looked like a couple of rabid dogs....but got called for only half their infractions...and whined and complained all the way to the box.
Toronto media and fans making a big deal of Alfredsson's mocking of Sundin's stick throw....calling it inappropriate. Perhaps...but not quite as inappropriate as actually DOING it. More than likely, Alfie was having a bit of fun with Mats. Did I hear correctly...that cost Sundin $47,000? That's a year's salary for a lot of mortals.

True, jkr....but Healey gave all the credit to the Sens for coming out strong. No injury excuses.
Still, you're right, he's a big time homer....I guess last night he had a Sundin-like brain cramp.
By the way, I ventured to a Leafs' fansite (because, working at MOJO, I have to keep up with the general Leaf fan sentiment; just to read...I'm NOT a member)....and believe it or not....a thread about Alfredsson mocking Sundin's stick throw is at 4955 views and 342 replies. Don't know how many are 13-year-old girls....but if the Leafs ever win the Cup, it'll be absolute mayhem. The most obnoxious, hockey-ignorant fans in Canada.

I think that the way the Leafs are playing, it's almost impossible for the referees to call every infractions... The philosophy is that you can clutch and grab on every shift, throw punches while finishing your checks... hack and slash with your stick... it doesn't matter... what it does is that the other team gets tired and have no choice but to start retaliate... When they do, the referres throw out a player of each team to make everything "fair" for both teams... What the Leafs are doing is bring their opponent to their level so they can compete... You pretty much have no other choice but to play dirty with them because if you don't, they will try to take out your best players...I would hate to see this sorry bunch even win a round in the playoffs...
By the way, I was happy to see Alfredson making fun of Sundin... I still remember how arrogant the Leafs players were when they won with a last minute goal against MTL earlier this year.... Everybody on their bench was laughing at the Canadiens players....
