Does anyone here watch it? I tend to tatch a few of the games each holiday, and find it rather entertaining hockey. It's also fun to see all the former NHLers that are still playing in Europe. I noticed there were a slew of former Habs players/prospects/farmhands at the tournament this year. Martti Jaraventti Oleg Petrov Andrej Bashkirov Yves Sarault Paul Dipietro Here's the official homepage of the tournament: www.spenglercup.ch/index.cfm?lang=2

I would watch some of it if I knew where to find it. I only have basic cable and TSN only carries highlights.
Does anyone know what this tournament is about? I know there was a Dr. Spengler who founded a hospital ( in Davos I think) around the time of WWII. Does it have anything to do with him?

Here't the link to the official site: www.spenglercup.ch/index.cfm?lang=2Sportsnet was carrying all of Canada's games and the final of the tourney. The games were sameday taped. Paul Romanuk - ex of TSN and The Fan - was doing the play by play. Is Sportsnet part of your basic cable package? Where I am, you need "Full Tier" to get it. The site has the rosters of all the teams that participated. You can see for yourself the large number of former NHLers that are part of the event.

Everything in Davos is about hockey during one week. And it's always an entertaining time, with fast hockey, quality teams, etc. The athmosphere is very special. By the way, one line on the Davos team was nearly an all-former-Habs team : Barry Richter-Petrov-Landry-Bashkirov (completed with Brett Hauer). Along with Sarrault, they're now all playing in the swiss national league.

I recall Paul DiPietro being pretty good in the cup run of 1993 (but then again, pretty much the entire team was).

I recall Paul DiPietro being pretty good in the cup run of 1993 (but then again, pretty much the entire team was). Yes, he and Dionne skated with Leclair. It was a formidable line that year. I'm not sure what Paul's biggest flaw was. However, like the others on that line, he failed to recapture the magic of that run in any following season in Montreal. Perhaps with Keane, Gilchrist, Conroy, and a host of others mgt felt there just wasn't room for him. Paul toiled in Toronto's system for a while before settling on Euro hockey. He's had a fine career over there. Gilbert Dionne? Well I don't think work ethic was in his vocabulary. He didn't have Marcel's talent to get away without working. Despite a positive start to his career, it quickly dwindled. He's playing in Germany now. I don't even want to discuss the other member of that line.
