Did anybody see Hrudey tonight after the 1st period of the leaf game?
They were talking about the Gonchar rumors ( the latest is Stajan & Steen). McLean brought up Leetch & I was very surprised by what Hrudey had to say.
Basically he said Leetch was past his prime, was lazy in his own end and was one of the least defensively responsible players on the team. I like honesty from commentators but was shocked to hear this. I don't see much Ranger hockey but I still consider him a dangerous player and a great PP quarterback.
This guy has done 3 things Gonchar will probably never do - win a Norris Trophy, a Conn Smythe Trophy & a Stanley Cup( although this was 10 years ago). Hearing him get ripped like that by someone like Hrudey was totally unexpected.

Leetch has always been an offensive d-man. I mean, look at the Rangers' D. That team is all offense! A great combo in the 80's, but look! Poti, Mironov, Malakhov, Leetch, de Vries. Four out of six positions specializing in creating offense...?
The Rangers really need to clean up the mess that Slats has made. Yuck.

Leetch is very good offensively and was more than adequate defensively in the past. Kelly is one of my favourite analysts because he is quite forthright, but usually isn't mean. What was his tone of voice like? Was it wistful "Leetch was once great but is now having problems with....." or was it too blunt, without any acknowledgment that the guy was once the best d-man in the league?

It looks as though they'll go with young Tyutin full-time next season, and de Vries and Kasparaitis will be back. That's three.

I found his tone uncharacterisic - he was taking some real shots. He saved his best for Brendl ( maybe he should find something else to do) and Cechmanek.

Let's hope that Hrudey is right.
