DENVER (CP) - The news on Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Moore was mixed Monday. His broken neck is expected to heal and he was listed in good condition but his overall prognosis and hockey future are uncertain.
``While Steve is making progress, his recovery time frame remains indefinite,'' Avs doctor Andrew Parker said in a statement released by the team.
Parker said Moore would be able to begin physical therapy once he has recovered from the neck injury and concussion. He suffered no paralysis and there is no evidence of spinal cord trauma.
``He can walk without assistance, but will need to continue wearing a cervical collar.'' The Avalanche release detailed all of Moore's injuries, including a third fractured vertebra that had not previously been disclosed.
Moore, 25, ended up in the hospital with three fractured vertebrae - two to cervical vertebrae and a fracture of the transverse process in a thoracic vertebra - facial cuts, significant post-concussion symptoms and ``significant amnesia'' after he was attacked from behind by Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi during a game March 8 in Vancouver.
Nerves in the neck area were also stretched by the blow.
``His neck fractures are expected to heal over the next 6-12 weeks with stabilization using a cervical brace,'' the Avalanche release said. ``However, his overall recovery and prognosis is uncertain, including his ability to return to professional hockey.''
