Just finished watching the mens gold medal game that featured the UNB Varsity Reds and the STFX X-Men. What an entertaining game. I saw the semi between UNB and Alberta last night, and it was great too. It's a treat to watch physical, somewhat fast, hockey where there is no trap. Constant forechecking. The second overtime period tonight still saw both teams sending in at least two forecheckers regularly. There was lots of hitting, lots of great plays, and great up-tempo action.
I've watched this level of hockey for years. It's some of the best hockey few people watch. Make no mistake, these players aren't laiden with an abundance of skill. They are good, but they're far from even AHLers for the most part. Still, it was more entertaining than many NHL games I've seen this season, or in recent ones.
I'm not going to say "trap this", and "trap that", because it's been beaten to death. I will say that in IMO there is a direct correlation between the quality of the games I saw this weekend and the fact that the trap wasn't implemented by any of the teams.
Oh, by the way STFX won it's first National Men's Hockey Championship ever tonight with a 3-2 2OT win over UNB. All three medalling teams are from the Maritimes, which must also be a first (1. STFX 2. UNB 3. Dalhousie).
If NHL playoffs remotely approach the level of entertainment of the two CIS games I saw we'll be in good stead this year. One can only hope.

Goat to hero, huh? Takes a penalty, comes out of the box and gets the double overtime winner. Blake Robson? A household name.
