Who didn't play last night was also interesting. Francis was a healthy scratch. And the other pick that Healy touted at the deadline - Johansson - didn't dress in favor of Pilar. Ferguson Are you suggesting Healy is a fool and doesn't know what he's talking about? Cause I sure am...

Just thought I'd keep you guys up-to-date on the latest rumblings in Laff-land:
On MOJO Radio "Leafs Breakfast" today, Bill Watters:
The Leafs' organization has a responsibility to its shareholders, namely the Teachers' Pension Fund, to make a return on their investment. And they have to get 5 playoff dates to meet budget. They did that. Until you get an individual owner/philanthropist like Mike Ilitch in here who will open the vault to bring a Stanley Cup back to Toronto....it doesn't look good.
My response: The Leafs payroll IS a pension fund. The guys they picked up were too old and the playoffs wore them down. Leetch was a victim of having to do too much. Francis couldn't take the strain. Johansson clearly was too rusty after a year off....and perhaps the best bang for their "deadline" buck in the playoffs was (gulp) Chad Kilger. Sorry Bill, at $62.5 million dolllars...the Leafs' payroll is no excuse. Calgary's is $36.4 million, Tampa Bay's is at $34 milion, San Jose's is at $34.4 million, and only Philly's is comparable at $68 million. Toronto has more than enough in the budget...they don't spend it properly..in fact they should start calling the ACC "Jurassic Park". Plus they have a bull-headed coach who insists on playing guys like Antropov on a regular shift.
Host John Oakley:
I'm just real pissed that they fooled us again. Expectations were so high for this team, and yes I think they should have beaten Philly. This was the year, we were all sold that bill of goods, and now it's 37 years and counting. How could they come in to a Game 6 and play for two and half periods they way they did?
My response: Perfectly understandable, but the same chorus we hear year after year. It's enough to drive one away from a team.
Michael Landsberg:
Do you really think the Leafs were better than the Flyers?
My response: Well said, Mr. Landsberg!
I love hearing this drama play out.

Watters, Oakley, Landsburg, ugh
Wasn't Oakley the clown who said Antropov was the next Beliveau?

Watters, Oakley, Landsburg, ugh Wasn't Oakley the clown who said Antropov was the next Beliveau? No, Oakley would never have said that. He's the morning show host and "Leafs' Breakfast" is just a feature on his show. He acts as facilitator and speaks more on the fans' behalf rather that just being a shill for the team. Landsberg has quite a few buddies (Domi, Quinn, Gilmour) associated with the Leafs, and Bill Watters was the assistant GM to Pat Quinn, so there's a real conflict of interest in various areas with those two guys. For example, Watters says he can't see why Quinn would be let go. Leafs Lunch with Watters and Jeff Marek is even more candy-coated. MOJO is the "home of the Leafs" so I think a more well-rounded and honest perspective is found on Bob Macown's show at 4:00 on the Fan 590. Oakley's statement in my post indicates the basic frustration of listening to Watters and Landsberg tout the Leafs chances, although Landsberg is quick to jump on certain players. Watters sounds like a company man through and through. Oakley stirs the pot, but his hands are tied as to how far he can go.

Paraphrased from a Leaf board...(I'll never do it again...but I just had to share this with you guys...does this represent the eternal folly of Leaf fans in general or what?) --------------------------------------------------------------------- I just saw the Leafs Year Wrap-Up Press Conference with Quinn and JFJ.
It is official. JFJ said that Quinn is coming back. Leetch will be back too and Quinn thinks that the roster core group that the Leafs are starting with next season are the best core ever to wear Blue & White.
I for one am THRILLED that Quinn gets to finish what he started. Im very sure that he'll be under the micro-scope during the early part of the season. But, certainly, as they shift into the playoffs I think Quinn will be leading the Leafs to glory.
GO LEAFS GO in 2005!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A la McDonald's, the Leafs should have a slogan under their logo....
Over a billion suckered since 1968.

Quinn's coming back? That's living proof right there that this team is not interested in winning any championship.

Quinn's coming back? That's living proof right there that this team is not interested in winning any championship. I'd say it's more of a budget move. Quinn has one year remaining on his contract at $2 million. If they let him go they still have to pay him. In my opinion, JFJ got the word from Tannenbaum and the other shareholders...the building will be filled whoever's behind the bench...tell the fans that we have the best team ever and that next year is OUR year. The next announcement will be yet another hike in ticket prices and that 5th and 6th jerseys are on sale now! How can you not be skeptical after 37 years? Lots of talk on Toronto radio stations about fans being fed up and going to Buffalo to watch games. Even with the travel and the exchange...it's cheaper, so they are saying.

Could also be because there may not be a CBA. Let him coach next year!
And if there is a hockey season, fire him with a dozen games left (worked for NJ).
