Seems like it's not necessary to be a top-5 spender in order to go deep in the playoffs anymore. Last year none of the top-5 spending teams went to the conference finals and this year, there's only one. Me thinks that this gives the owners even more leverage heading into the CBA talks. *on a side-note: kudos to the Nashville Predators for making the playoffs despite holding down the lowest payroll in the league.

If we focus on the middle-of-the-road payrolls of the Habs in those years we can see that they had nothing to show for it and they still don't.
