I had proposed this trade at the start of the season in an unnamed other forum- Jason Spezza and Patrick Lalime for Jose Theodore and Saku Koivu. I was basically assaulted by Ottawa fans claiming I wanted the godly senators for a one year wonder Jose Theodore and an injury prone loser like Koivu. Well I wonder what the Senator fans are saying now???

Habs fans seem to be strangely silent on this one.

At the beginning of the year I may have done that ..... but I would have been trying to trade Lalime for another goalie as soon as possible. Who knows maybe at the start of the season we could have gotten Kiprusoff or Toskala for Lalime. Spezza would have made that trade a dandy, but I'd rather Garon in my net than Lalime.

It isn't a bad proposal but these kind of high-profile trades rarely occur between teams in the same division.
From the Habs perspective I would do the deal in a heartbeat. The Habs would get that big, offensive center that they've needed for so many years and in Lalime, they would be getting someone who can be an adequate backup.
But if I'm the Sens I don't think that I'd part with my future no. 1 center for a goalie who's not proven in the NHL post-season. I think the best bet for the Sens is to pursue Olaf Kolzig again. He's the only available goalie who is a top 10 guy with playoff experience.

Can't say I'd do it. I don't like Spezza's attitude. One need only look at his comments after Martin was fired. He couldn't keep his mouth shut. Spezza did little to endear himself to the coach. There had to be a good reason that Martin chose to play Vermette over Spezza. If Muckler decides to hire a Keenan like guy, Spezza's gonna wish that Martin was still there.
FG, I'm going to have to disagree on the size thing. Jason isn't small, but he plays small. He's less physical than Saku, and uninclined to get his nose dirty. I liken him to a bigger Ribeiro in many respects. Great vision, and playmaking, somewhat overshadowed by average skating and a less than perfect attitude. Ribs has grown up a lot in the last year or so. We'll see if Spezza can.

Ribs has grown up a lot in the last year or so. We'll see if Spezza can. I didn't like the comments Spezza made after Martin's firing either. I also didn't like the way he handled being demoted to the AHL, but he's young and intangibles like attitude can always improve if he's surrounded by the right coaching staff and veteran leaders. Your comparison with Mickey Ribs is a good one. Ribeiro grew up a lot this year. When he was benched he took it like a man and he was always around to answer to the media after games. If Ribs can turn it around, then I'm sure young Jason will someday too. As for the size issue. I agree that Spezza doesn't play big, but he's harder to knock off the puck then a guy like Ribeiro. He's only 20 years old, so there is still a good chance that he'll become even bigger than his 6'2", 208 lbs frame. I don't think Spezza will ever be considered a physical player, but he has good size and his offensive instincts are off the charts. I see a lot of Patrick Marleau in Jason Spezza. Both players are almost the exact same size (Marleau: 6'2", 210 lbs), are not considered to be very physical, but have incredible offensive awareness.
