Umberger a UFA According to Larry Brooks

It's only been two and a half hours since the deadline, and we usually hear about some signings well after the deadline, so Brooks may have jumped the gun here. But if it's true, that makes two clubs that couldn't get R.J. inked. Does he really want to play in Pittsburgh that badly?
I hope Gainey's done his homework on Umberger. Asked around, and found out if he's worth an offer. Savard saw a lot of games leading up to the 2001 draft, and Umberger was on the 2001 WJC team with Hainsey and Komo, so Savard's probably seen him a lot and has an opinion on his abilities. Gainey could also put a call in to Sather and Burke and find out why they couldn't or didn't sign the kid.
I've liked Umberger for a couple of years. We sure could use a big, skilled, smooth skating center in the organisation.
