Bobby Clarke signs him for just over a million clams when two other teams who held his rights fail to sign him.
Things that make you go HMMMM.

This is the way rich teams can have better chances of staying top teams - simply by buying talent, either young or old...

Did the Flyers sign him becaue they were rich and could afford it or does this represent Umberger's true value. Perhaps Clarke is just shrewd... Then again, I don't think he signed Ruggeri who will be going back into the draft and could be a good 2nd round pick for someone.

Perhaps Umberger just didn't progress the way the Canucks hoped and the Rangers took a closer look too. Maybe after a chat with him you come away wishing you hadn't touched the kid. Maybe Clarke doesn't care about character. Maybe he's right and everyone else is wrong. After all, he took Chouinard off our hands (sorry Doc).
