Hopefully this means that the Pens will not pursue Kovalev.

Where would the money come from? They felt obliged to trade Kovalev to the Rangers because they couldn't afford him. Add Kovalev ... and Lemieux ... to Recchi and the Pens would be hard pressed to stay within $20M. And they still have to sign Malkin.

Apparently the Pens are applying to the State to get a slots licence to pay for a new arena, so maybe that is a potential source of income or else frees up other money in the kitty. Who knows, but the idea of an NHL running a gambling shop is quite unique (although the Oil and Flames share profits with the Province on a lottery in Alberta). www.postgazette.com/pg/04187/342017.stm

Also, if Marc-Andre Fleury is their starting goalie in the coming season, then they have to pay him his NHL salary. A salary that I heard can go over $3M if he reaches his bonuses.

Personally, I think that's a silly signing. Mark is a terrific guy, but very much on the decline of his career. He's worth about $700,000 this year and dropping. But then, the Penguins have been making quite foolish decisions (especially coaching) for some time now. Figures.

So there would be a new Igloo financed by state lottery funds? Well, unless it could be constructed very quickly with ice blocks it wouldn't be available for several years. Therefore, there wouldn't be any increased revenue from the box office gate for some time, so in the meantime how would the Penguins handle an increased payroll? Borrow the money against anticipated lottery income and future sales? They would have to pay interest on a very large loan (they couldn't use their own capital because they don't have any). Moreover, they're already in debt. My degrees aren't in finance, so perhaps someone could explain it all to me.

But then, the Penguins have been making quite foolish decisions (especially coaching) for some time now. Figures. I agree that he is near the end of his career, but I wouldn't call the signing silly - there have been many goofier. Just look at our own Patrice Brisbois. Seriously, how many 700k players get 26 goals w/ 75 points in a season? Three million has been the norm for twenty goal scorers for some time. It may be a little high come that third year if his play really starts to slide, but Recchi is a real ironman. I bet he will still be playing 80 games a year at the end of this contract.

IMO, calling Mark Recchi a $700K player is unrealistic. He's still better than most forwards in the league.
