Check this out: www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=87408&hubName=nhlPersonally, I think this would be a stupid move by Ottawa. It's good that they're looking to make a change in goaltending, but Hasek isn't going to win anybody any Stanley Cups. He didn't win the one he got in Detroit, though I think he'll provide possibly more consistent goaltending than Lalime does. I thought this team was really high on that Ray Emery kid. Why not groom him instead of getting some over-the-hill goalie who hasn't made a highlight reel save in virtually five seasons?

Ditto, Mattias. Bonehead move. But desperation is setting into the Ottawa franchise. They need to prove to the fans that they are serious about winning the Cup. It's a two-stage process: find a new coach that can take them to the Promised Land (they blew that one, imo) and find a goaltender to carry them there (0-fer if they get Hasek, I think).
Sounds like they think Emery is not quite ready (has to work on his temper at the very least). They are grooming, but the Sens window of opportunity is closing.
Besides, why sign a big name to a big contract until the results of the CBA are in?

He didn't win the one he got in Detroit, though I think he'll provide possibly more consistent goaltending than Lalime does. Given the Senators situation in goal it doesn't look like they have any other choice. Game 7 against Toronto was most likely Lalime's last start in a Sens uniform and acquiring Olaf Kolzig was deemed too expensive at the deadline. Therefore, Hasek may be over-the-hill and all, but seeing how the Sens can acquire him for cheap and given the fact that they won't be bogged down with a long-term contract, I don't think that it's that bad of an idea. It's true that he's not the sole reason that the Wings won the Cup, but it's not like he made them lose it either. There's a big difference there and Ottawa knows all about it. None of the series wins that Ottawa has achieved in their short history can be credited solely to Lalime, but we can all think of series losses that we can blame on him. If Hasek goes to Ottawa he won't have to steal games like he used to do for Buffalo, all he has to do is provide steady, consistent goaltending. He doesn't have to be spectacular, he just has to make the right saves at the right time and I think that he's still capable of doing that. I don't know if Emery is ready to jump into the fire yet, he probably still needs to be groomed. If that's the case, why not groom him behind a 6-time Vezina winner?... doesn't seem like too bad of an idea to me.

However, if indeed there are 6-8 teams interested in himit may develop into some kind of bidding war and raise his price. How much will Melnyk be willing to pay? I wonder if there is another Kiprusoff out there?

Maybe their looking at a possible Czech duo in goal with Hasek and Prusek. The elder "sek" might be a mentor to the younger one.
Really though, if the Sens are going to go after an aging goalie with injury problems they should go after Belfour. Eddie had that Stanley Cup option on his contract that didn't pan out. He'll be fair game on July 1st. Of the two, I think Belfour has a lot more game at this point.

Belfour is by far the better option, but I'm not too sure that the Leafs are going to let him go. Belfour's stated that he really wants to finish his career in Toronto and management has indicated that they want him back, so I'd be really surprised if The Eagle is available come July 1st.

So would I, but stranger things have happened. Eddie's weak back has carried the Leafs for two years. Without him they'd be up the perverbial creek without a paddle. It would be the ultimate fly in their ointment if he signed with Ottawa though. ;D
