According to the Boston Globe, Bob Gainey has made some interesting offers to Chiarelli in order to complete a trade for Patrice Bergeron but the Bruins GM isn't interested just yet. Apparently, according to RDS, acquiring quality local players is among the priorities of the organization for this summer and if they can't get Briere (who appears to be the main target), Bob has a couple of trade scenarios he's been working on for some time...
While I'd love Bergy on my team, I think hell will freeze over before Jacobs okays a trade that would send an impact player to Montreal...

Bergeron would make a nice first line center!!
We have lots of goaltenders and that what Boston is looking for, perhaps a goaltender like Huet and a player Samasonov, with a prospect and picks could land him here.

An interesting scenario but like Doc suggests inter-divisional trades rare.
I think the only way Bergeron gets to Montreal is if it ends up a three-way deal that catches Boston off guard.
Cheers.

As someone from another board suggested, I can see Higgins or Komi or Price being a mendatory piece of the package heading the other way.

I think that any Bruins GM that deals Bergeron to the Habs would be lynched before he even hung up the phone. I'd give that one a negative chance at happening.
As an aside, I don't think the Bruins really need goalies. They have both Hannu Toivenen and Tuuku Rask in their system, both of whom are still highly thought of (despite Toivenen's tough season).
The cynical side of me says this is just a little candy for the fans. I mean, come on, like the Bruins are (a) going to deal Bergeron, and (b) deal him to the Habs. Didn't we learn our lesson from all those Gagne rumours?

Instead, they gave up Rask, who is one of the more highly thought of goalie prospects in the world. I'd rather aim for guys like Alexandre Picard (Flyers) or Derrik Brassard (Columbus). While the price would be high in both cases, I don't think it would be Bergeron high... in other words, you would't have to gut your team to do it.

I'd even go as far as saying that, IMO, Boivin and the hockey operation guys, probably listed a bunch of players they want to get at all cost (or close to it). It's part of that "we have the money for a superstar" suprise announcement. Boivin wants a player to put the face of the franchise on.

It would have to be one heck of a deal to send any of those guys the other direction -- Bergeron is certainly not enough coming this way to give away the core of our future. That happens and Cranky'll . . . well, I don't even want to think about what Cranky'll do or say!!

I remember hearing a few years ago that Bergeron grew up hating the Habs. That he'd never play for them. If people want to wax poetic about the Habs landing guys that grew up Hab fans (Lecavalier, Crosby) then they better be ready to dismiss those who grew up hating the team.

I agree with you but I don't think Boivin minds at all gutting this team to get his guy. And who can blame him really? Missing the playoff last year was somewhat of a marketing catastrophe in the eyes of the President, Gainey's patient little building process with good little guys that have little to no marketing appeal doesn't seem totally in synch with Boivin and the failure of that approach certainly won't go unnoticed. Last summer Boivin felt the need to come out publicly in order to say that it was a priority for the HABS to have local players (they ended up with the lowest amount of them I can remember) and this year he comes out to say "...we have the resources to get the superstar..." and I definitely think that this time around Boivin does not want to see that same little team with a few more European prospects to fill holes... It's not that long ago that selling season tickets and luxury boxes in the Bell Center was a struggle and I am certain Boivin does not want to get back there. Picard and Brassard are nice kids but like for Latendresse and Lapierre they would be in over their head having to deal with being the face of the club at such a young age.

Bergeron for Higgins. The perfect deal.
A french canadien who hates Montreal for an American who hates Boston. Both young, both able to become the guy dragged kicking and screaming to be the face of the franchise ... the local hero.

I'm not saying I don't want him . . . just that our D is so thin as it is we can't afford to send Komi anywhere, Price is supposed to be our long-term solution in goal (and as BC mentioned, I'm not sure that Boston is looking for help in net), and Higgins (despite Skilly's feelings) and Ryder (despite THab's feelings) are a core part of our future -- I'd hate to see either of them go. But there are lots of "potentials" in the A -- it is time to bring them up and let them play or to trade them for assets that can be used now. Not sure who Chiarelli might be interested in (hold on to Chips, Grabs, SK, O'Byrne) but let him pick a couple. [And throw in Sammy while you're at it. PLEASE!]

Bergeron? Why is Gainey looking for players this team already has? This has to be bogus.

Higgins (despite Skilly's feelings) Huh? I like Higgins. But when you look at our roster, he is probably the only guy who can step in right away and help that the Bruins would want and we may be willing to let go. Are you telling me you don't think a Bergeron for Higgins deal is fair? My only knock on Higgins was the "injury excuse" ... and it wasn't a knock on Higgins, but more so a knock on his supporters. We can't afford to let people go through the motions for 4 months. I did state 3 yrs ago I thought he'd never get 40 points in the NHL, but I really liked what I saw in his rookie season and the early part of last year. I absolutely hated what I saw for 3 months after Xmas. For Bergeron ... I'd be willing to part with Higgins. Now the one thing I am not sure of is where Bergeron fits in our line-up, he doesn't fit with anyone that I can see. But that isn't a bad thing, because our style really sucked lat year ,.... time to change it.

Bergeron straight-up for Higgins I'd pass on.....Bergeron straight-up for Price I'd do in a heart-beat.

I don't know, maybe I misread the RDS report. The way I understood it was that Gainey made an offer to Boston back at the trade deadline. He was shot down. I saw nothing stating that he is still making offers for him. Am I missing something?

When did Price become an "NHL Franchise Goalie"? An "already 20 YR-OLD NHL STAR" for a "yet-to-make-it-possibility"? I'd bet the bank Boston would laugh at this proposal.

As much as I love everything I hear about Price, and as much as I like Higgins, I'd give up either one in a heartbeat for Bergeron.
Bergeron is young and has shown he can produce mightily in this league - all very good signs...
The only problem with Bergeron is just that he's such a valuable commodity, that I expect Boston will be expecting too much, and the price paid is going to be very painful. (Higgins or Price counts as very painful!!)

Bergeron....tied with Souray for second worst in the league this year at -28.
Is Montreal really that much more defensively responsible at even-strength than Boston? From what I saw, the answer is no.
22 G: 14 PP, 8 EV 48 A: 24 PP, 24 EV
Seems as if our PP (that even at #1 couldn't propel us into the playoffs) would have a good chance of remaining at #1....but our even-strength play wouldn't improve one iota.
That's the downside.
The upside: he'll be only 22 in July. Still lots of time to reach his prime and improve his play.
I would hang onto Price for dear life, though. You don't go anywhere without superb goaltending. Halak stepping in more than admirably for a struggling Aebischer is the only reason we weren't eliminated by mid-March.

I saw nothing stating that he is still making offers for him. Am I missing something? They said Gainey put forward an "interesting offer" for him AND had tried to get him at the deadline as well. Chiarelli did state that Bergeron and Murray are part of the core and were not available.

You don't go anywhere without superb goaltending. ...but superb goaltending alone doesn't get you far nowadays. The NHL is focusing more and more on offense and goal scoring, every years new rules and restrictions are coming up to make forwards life easier and this will only intensify as they fully intend to take the competitiveness nature off of the goalie's hand (or gloves) and into the goal scorers hands. Sure enough a great goalie will always steal you a couple of games but we are waaaaaaaaay behind most teams in terms of developping a potent NHL attack and a guy like Begeron would be one giant step forward in that direction.

Building from the net out has always worked. The 80s Oilers is the only team I remember who could win Stanley Cups playing pond hockey...and Fuhr was no slouch. They even needed a Conn Smythe performance from Ranford in 89-90. By all appearances, we seem set in goal. Our next priority has to be upgrading our D. I see your point about the attack....but...if our D remains status quo (i.e. d-men who can't control the zone and quarterback breakout plays)....we will continue to fight for 8th, even if we had Crosby up front.
