In order to find the money to sign Smyth, Calgary would almost certainly be required to move a pricey contract – and Alex Tanguay’s is the most likely to go, under that scenario. The most logical destination for Tanguay would be Montreal, where the Canadiens may get shut out of the action on Daniel Briere by an overwhelming offer expected to come from the Los Angeles Kings. Another less likely scenario would see the Flames move Tanguay to the Canadiens in exchange for Alexei Kovalev. The rationale for that would be Kovalev won a Stanley Cup with Mike Keenan for the 1994 New York Rangers and Tanguay, a skilled but soft player whose confidence can disappear in a flash, probably won’t be a great fit on a Keenan-coached team. Rumours from Eric Duhatschek of The Globe & Mail

Hmm, the Flames brought Tanguay in for secondary scoring and to complement Iggy. He did not always get the job done there, and this is the role that the Habs would want Tanguay to fill in Montreal.
This sounds like a mid July move at best when others are gone.
Could Carbo get more out of him than Playfair did?

The hopeful fan would suggest that Calgary's crash and bang style of play is ill-suited to Tanguay's game and I would agree with that. Now whether he's suited to Montreal's game, whatever that is, is a good question too.

Wouldn't mind having the guy at all, he did get 81 points last season...

Tanguay sure can put up the points AND he's a natural center too...
Another thing about him is that on top of being gifted offensively, he's also a + players every seasons.
He does come with a soft tag though and apparently doesn't come to work every nights. From the Q or not, this is the kind of player we're trying to move away from IMO.

I think Tanguay would be a great addition to the team - and I think Carbo could get more out of him than Playfair or Keenan...

81 points is more than any Canadiens player got last season.

Doc, here in Calgary I saw him play close to 70 games last year, and he is an enormous improvement on Kovalev. This would be a dream deal for the Habs. He's not a softie, trust me.

Would they take Ryder and a pick for Tanguay ?

Why does everyone get on Ryder's back? I remember a couple of years ago you were all thrilled that he made the team, and then applauding his play. Now suddenly everyone wants to deal him left and right.

To me, as annoying as it is to see his name in every rumour, it is more of a compliment to him. Teams need players that can score, and their isn't a team in the league that wouldn't take him..... except one: Montreal. But hey, all those goals are easy to make up. Higgins and Pleky alone are going to cover Ryder's 30 goals ... so the story goes anyways.

Sometimes Ryder frustrates even me with his one-dimensional play, and his insistence on shooting when a pass would make better sense, but when you look at the current roster, there is no one else who you can say is a certainty for at least 30 goals. If you're trading Ryder, you better be getting someone back who can make up those goals.

...furthermore, after seeing Tanguay in Calgary, this is a guy who ONLY passes the puck! It was infuriating, at times, for the fans when he would always pass when he had a open lane for shooting.

I have a really good reply to that, but good sportsmanship and the code of conduct prevent me from sharing it with you. It's hard being a good guy sometimes.
