Gilbert's faced some injury troubles. If healthy, he's a keeper.

Federov the pros:
* I can't see how a guy like Federov could hurt us down the playoff stretch. He's a former Cup winner with Detroit I think. That kind of experience would be crucial.
* A decent, not dominant, faceoff guy.
* If some of the Russian players have approached the organization on him, it would be a huge boost to the morale of those players.
The cons might include:
* The Blue Jackets are only 4 points out of a playoff spot. Unless they crash and burn it's entirely possible any serious run they make will have to include Federov.
* The knock on him is that he tends to play when he wants to. It might not be a factor given the rejuvenation of Kovalev.
* The age factor. Will he have enough gas in the tank to give his all in the post season?
* What would the Blue Jackets want in return?
* Might mean Chipchura remains where he is for the remainder of the year.
Cheers.

OMG - he is now actually printing a rumor of Phaneuf to New Jersey. I couldn't see Calgary parting with this guy for many seasons.

The talk is all Phaneuf here in CGY. Sutter has some tough decisions ahead: Conroy (expendable), Langkow, Huselius, and Phaneuf. Something's got to give if he wants to keep Phaneuf for more than a couple of years.

Trading Phaneuf at this point would be like trading Chelios. It might work out for the short term, but long term it'll be a disaster.

I agree. Players like Phaneuf don't come along every day. In my mind (and I'm not a Flames fan at all), he's as valuable to the team as Iginla and Kiprusoff, and pretty close to being an elite player.
The Flames are also on the hook for Tanguay.

He's as elite as they come. In my estimation, Phaneuf is EASILY the best 2-way d-man in the game today. Letting a player of that calibre go is sheer stupidity.

There are issues with Phaneuf's defensive play, and his postioning, at times, but he has a huge intimidation factor, and his offense cannot be denied.

Today Eklund is reporting Mtl as a possible 'suitor' for Phaneuf. Why stop with Mtl, I'd say EVERY team in the league would covet Phaneuf.

If Phaneuf is actually available, I'd be that every team save possibly Anaheim would be putting in a bid. If you didn't you'd be stupid. He's one of those guys who you'd have to ruin your franchise to acquire, though.

If Phaneuf is available, there's no way Sutter will trade him to a Western Conference team.

Ken King (President of the Flames) was on the radio yesterday, denying all reports of Phaneuf being shopped. He even said that they are very close to signing him to a long-term deal.

No way Phaneuf gets traded why would they pass on one of the best D in the game. They have alot of other guys whom are way more expenable that they could replace alot cheaper this rumour is laughable.Depending on the return Tanguay is the guy they would mover if they recieved decent scoring or the potential in return and that still only may happen in the offseason. I am more interested in the Olli Jokinen wants out of Florida rumors. I imagine the rest of the conference would sit up straight if that ever happened. Odd thing though; can't remember where I read it, maybe it was here, but I read that he can be a bit of a head case. You know, plays when he feels like it, that sort of jazz. The only time I read it though. Cheers.

HFTO Agreed. I can't imaging any GM getting rid of Phaneuf in order to hold on to the likes of Heuselius, Langkow, or Tanguay. With all due respect to those players, they're not franchise building blocks. They're nice pieces to have, but not on the same level as Iginla, Kiprusoff, and Phaneuf. That rumour probably originated from a bored, and wishful thinking journalist.

I mulled over something like Plekanec, Ryder/Kostopoulos/Lapierre, one of O'Byrne, Valentenko or Carle, and a 1st/2nd round pick in exchange for Jokinen and a 2nd/3rd.. but it doesn't make sense to do that in season.. ruins chemistry. Even that is pretty costly. I don't know, I'm terrible at proposing trades. It's not like anythink that Eklund talks about ever comes to fruition anyway.

I personally like Jokinen a lot as a player, but the rumoured asking price seems rather high. He is basically a point/ game player. If that is what they're asking, they can keep him.

Smuckland has Recchi being possibly available should Atlanta fall by the wayside.Since the Habs apparently put put a claim in they would get one of the first cracks at Rex.I know Saku would absolutely love it.As some insurance considering his play it could be a fall back plan for Bo or maybe just the type of pickup he's willing to go after.I wasn't for getting him at the time but he is playing well.
