There's a lot of hype surrounding Briere for tomorrow's FA frenzy. But, would you entertain Selanne for a reasonable cost?
I think we talked about it, oh I don't know ... about five years ago too.
Cheers.

I think many of us would love to have Selanne play alongside Koivu. After all it's been a dream on this board for years. But if we're going by needs, then a centerman (Briere) would be a more of a priority. If Briere can't be had, then I would go after Zubrus.
Also, FWIW, rumours have Selanne saying that if he plays next season, it'll only be in Anaheim.

The Habs already have a productive RW in Ryder. I say lets get him signed long term & concentrate the UFA shopping on centre and D.

Selanne just had 2 highly prodcutive seasons, he's 37 but frankly nothing suggests that he's slowing down... Since the Ducks signed Bert I would guess they pretty much gave up on signing Selanne.
I would certainly be glad with getting Selanne at this point because it would have a very positive impact on the team, on the fan base, and throughout the league in general. Signing Selanne would mean HABS wants to win NOW. Saku would do backflips over this signature.

Well, if it came down to a money issue, Doc, I'd be more apt to pay Selanne what he'd be asking for than Ryder. Take nothing away from Ryder, though. He's going to arbitration and IMHO, that's the right move for a player in his position. But, Selanne brings so much more to the table, which includes the commitment and mindset it takes to win it all. He's a character guy former linemate of Koivu's. If it came down to it, I'd try to sign Selanne for the duration of Koivu's contract (2 years is it), with a club option for an additional year and a no-trade clause included as well. I don't necessarily want to move a guy like Ryder out of Montreal; I mean, heck, look what he's done for us over the past three seasons. However, I think Gainey might view acquiring Selanne as giving him a few more options WRT Mike. But, that's just me. Cheers.

I didn't think this would slip into a Selanne vs Ryder debate but... ...Ryder will be a very tough player to keep once he hit free agency and looking at how things transpired from both side of the fence, I would be very suprised if he would not decide to hit free agency next summer. I'm not saying Ryder wants out nor that Gainey wants him out, but it just seems that Micheal isn't as high in Gainey's priority as Ryder would like to be and that creates frictions each and every summer. 30 goals scorer don't grow on tree, espcially not in Montreal, but I can see Ryder commending quite a raise in arbitration. Gainey just can't let him walk though... Would Selanne bring more? It depends. He is more polished and more involved in every aspects but Ryder proved to be productive in an environment where it is very tough to be productive. An environemnt that some have described as offensively suffocating...

Bringing in Selanne would be a home run for us, and like Doc says make Koivu a much happier guy, but I don't see it happening. If he was coming back it would've been with Anaheim or MAYBE somewhere else in CA.
We can always dream though.

I don't think Gainey's interested in acquiring Selanne, or else a deal may have already been done. Even if he wants to play in Anaheim, it may take a few phone calls from Saku to convince him...

If Gainey isn't interested then he should be. Selanne is coming of seasons of 40 & 48 goals, totals no Hab has reached in a very long time. However I tend to believe what I read about this situation - that he will retire or return to the Ducks.

Were all salivating for a name player to land in Habland but at what cost and at the expense of whom. I too want to the Habs have a star player but not a falling one,if the Habs are going to go after stud player they need one with alot of upside.Gainey has tested our patience building this team slowly so he might as well see it through this year to see what we have.Of course if Selanne wanted to come on the cheap for a year, that you'd would have to look at.
