Isn't everybody? All Swedish Line--Toronto Sun He's already got the line named. MAP. Mats Alex and Peter. Awww, now ain't that cute! What an in-depth article. My two favourite snippets: "As it stands now, we won't go into the free agent market," said John Jr.
"But things could change. We could be interested in Peter Forsberg if conditions are right.
However, in that case, we would have to make room for him in view of the cap situation." So, no, maybe, well....we'll see. As he (Ferguson) says: "Our team has the necessary depth, but our players would have to show improvement in two areas -- offence and reduce the goals against statistics." So, let me get this straight. The keys to improving are scoring more goals, and letting fewer in. Anybody got a hotline to Gainey....this is groundbreaking stuff.

Maybe it's inexperience on Ferguson's part but he said a lot of things just to keep the media interested. There's nothing wrong with just saying something like, "... well, he's an impact hockey player, but Peter Forsberg isn't in our plans at this time."
Instead he tries to reason out the scenario by saying, "... But things could change. We could be interested in Peter Forsberg if conditions are right."
That just leads them on IMHO.
Cheers.

Spector pointed out a day or so ago that the Leafs have about 1.6MM in cap space, so signing Forsberg is a pipe dream. An opium pipe dream.

But he does have 2 typical Leaf qualities: He's old and injury prone.

From Darren Dreger:
Canadian teams gun for Forsberg
Five of the six Canadian teams acknowledge they have inquired about Peter Forsberg's status, but as one general manager so aptly puts it, "there's no point in chasing ghosts."
Translation - calls have been placed with the expectation if (or when) Forsberg resurfaces, Canada will be well represented in the frenzy that is sure to ensue.
The Calgary Flames interest has been persistent with the thinking Forsberg and Jarome Iginla would make a nice 1-2 punch.
Both Ottawa and Vancouver are also in the market for a top six forward, but neither team is holding out much hope.
The same can be said about the Edmonton Oilers, whose offence looks like Swiss cheese with the departure of Ryan Smyth, Joffrey Lupul and Petr Sykora.
If Forsberg's health improves, all options will be considered and all interest will be weighed.
However, a list of frontrunners might look something like this.
1. The Philadelphia Flyers. It's believed Forsberg remains grateful for the way this organization stood by him through his ongoing fight to stay healthy. 2. The Colorado Avalanche. Forsberg won two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche. With his history and comfort level in Denver, it would be easy to build a case for his return.
3. Detroit. Nicknamed "Little Sweden," the Red Wings have many faces very familiar to Forsberg. Ken Holland didn't spend foolishly in free agency, so cap space in Detroit is not an issue.
4. The Anaheim Ducks. If Scott Niedermayer returns, Anaheim's dominance will be sick! If the Ducks will have him, why wouldn't Forsberg want to join the fight to repeat as Stanley Cup Champions?
This kind of speculation will flow until Forsberg is physically able to make a decision on his playing future. In the meantime, teams will continue to call, teams will continue to try and arrange a sit-down interview with the star forward in hope of gaining the inside track.
And yes, that includes Canadian teams.

Is it just me or does Dreger have a panache for stating the painfully obvious....
Notice he said 5 of 6 teams and does not name that 5th team ... its either Montreal or Toronto and he once again shows his pure bias .
