I am not saying I would move Higgins, but that's what Marinaro says Waddell is looking at!

I hate this rumor. I like Hossa, but I would never trade Higgins for ANYBODY.

Seeing as how Atlanta is currently tied for their division lead (and the 3rd overall spot in the conference), and after hearing Waddell say that the Thrashers "would most definitely be buyers at the deadline" I would be surprised if Hossa was moved for anything less than a Higgins +... and even then.
A lot can change in the next couple of weeks, of course, but Gainey may be expending a lot of energy for nothing, if he is in fact trying to land Hossa.

All sorts of stuff out there now guys. I'll bet that most of the contending teams are out there working on something.
We're going after Hossa, Ryder leaving the Bell Centre yesterday with his gear (apparently this is bogus). Who knows really?
The Western Conference is pretty much a train wreck right now. Lots of teams are still contending, so any major deals would be a surprise to me anyway.
Pretty entertaining reading I guess. But, I think we won't know anything until something actually transpires.
Cheers.

On another board a radio report is being quoted as saying Emelin would be in the package as well.
Higgins, Emelin, +?
If Hossa isn't re-signed, that's a really steep price.

Something that concerns me about Hossa though; is he coachable? Can he learn defensive responsibility or the way of playing hockey in Montreal?
Cheers.

Did I mention that I hate this 'rumored' trade? Higgins bleeds red, white and blue, and even with his current slump, gives 100% effort every time on the ice. I'll take that type of player over Marian Hossa any day.

Plays a regular PK shift and is pretty much the best two-way forward in the NHL short of Brad Richards when Richards is playing well. Hossa's a +85 in his career, including his -14 this season. In fact, it's his only - year in the NHL except for 1997-98, when he played 7 games and was -1. I'm not sure about the "being coachable" part, but it seems to me he'd fit in well in a puck possession type of offense because right now he's shooting too much, part of the reason I think Atlanta isn't doing as well as they could be. When Hossa was in Ottawa he was getting 230 shots a year and 35+ goals. Now he's shooting 300+ times and still only scoring 35. He's got no one to pass to.

Jason Ward with the pick before. Ah well, Dan Cleary went after him, Scott Hannan and Brenden Morrow later on. Waddayagonnado?

What is it, guys? Some of you want to land a forward with lots of offensive power, but you want to do it without giving anybody up. You're not going to land Marian Hossa by offering only prospects the other way. They need players who are NHL-ready.
If Bob is seriously willing to pick up Hossa, and can do it without losing too many assets, then that's a huge plus for him.

Simply put, I don't want Hosssa. I'm quite happy with the make-up of the team as it currently stands, and don't feel there is a need to change any of the parts.

I don't want to be a wet blanket or anything. Discussing theses rumors is fun. But I have one question: When was the last time Eklund was right about something?

I do the deal as well but still would try like hell not to give up a roster player with the exception of Ryder whom hopefully would be part of this deal.Until Komi is signed you can't underestimate the Higgins bond.Atlanta needs D -men and Emelin certainly is a great starting point, since you could project him to start in Atlanta.Although a tough player to give up but you need to give up something to get something. Before any deal of such proportions is done the Habs have to have Hossa signed. There's no way Atlanta takes Ryder for Hossa. If Ryder was playing and scoring, then maybe. But not the way things are going with him these days. There are too many intangibles with Chris Higgins. So if it's Higgins that they insist upon, walk away Bob. Just walk away.

What did Gainey said he needed? A centerman with size that's good on faceoff.
If I was a betting man, I would place an old loonie on Bobby Holik being in Bob's sight. He has really dropped off the map since being traded from NJ but as a #3 center, playing for a bunch of defensive coaches, he could probably give us a good playoff run.
Holik for Dandy and Smoke... Somthing like that.

He wouldn't say... ...just to give extra information, which probably wasn't clear in my first post, Emelin is the guy teams are calling for, Marinaro stated that Atlanta wanted Emelin and a roster player. Marinaro said that the player was "probably" Higgins. He said that he guarantees that they are talking about Hossa...Emelin is a piece that he knows about...For all we know, the roster player could be Brisebois (NOT) ...but you get my drift. Marinaro speculated Higgins because that's who he thinks Waddell would ask for, in addition to Emelin. THF

hossa is the only real big name target that i would be setting sights on too, he's the piece we're looking for to put us over the top. add hossa without taking away more than a prospect and a pick, and we're contenders.
i still think we need a partner for hamrlik, we've got 5 good d-men, we're missing a 6th.
breez/streit/dandy are not good enough to be regular.
when is o'byrne back?

There's no way Atlanta takes Ryder for Hossa. I dont think so either ... not even if he was scoring. Whoever goes the other way will have to be able to play with Kovalchuk. Ryder doesn't fit the bill, Higgins does.

Ryder doesn't fit the bill, Higgins does. Atlanta is pretty weak down the middle. Higgins is billed as a LW/C. Still, there's too much hype surrounding Hossa. I think Atlanta might be in the same boat as Montreal was last year. If they're close to the playoffs they'll have to keep their best players regardless. Like Souray in Montreal, Atlanta may end up losing Hossa for nothing. And unlike Montreal with Souray, I suspect Atlanta may open their vaults as much as they can for him. Yet, if Hossa has his choice I suspect he may want to go to a team like Detroit. Recent tradition of winning, strong teams for about 20 years now; stuff like that. Besides he's in the driver's seat right now. All he and his agent need do is look at Ovechkin's deal and go from there. Cheers.

I don't know if you can gamble on Hossa without being able to sign him to an extension. As much as I want another top 6 forward, from a team building standpoint I just don't know if you can justify the risk of losing young players/prospects for a rental. It's tempting but the risk/reward just doesn't add up.
If we are going to unload a player like Higgins and 1-2 top prospects it should be for a player that can be a prime contributor for the next 2-3 years. The Islanders tried that last year in the Ryan Smyth trade and they didn't even make the playoffs.
BTW, is that deal a good comp? Smyth was 31 years old and headed for UFA when he was traded to the Islanders for Robert Nilsson, Ryan O'Marra and a 1st round pick in 2007. Nilsson and O'Marra were both former 1st round picks and so far only Nilsson is playing in the NHL. Smyth was not the offensive dynamo that Hossa is but he has always been a fierce competitor and a regular for Team Canada. In that light, perhaps giving up Higgins is a steep price to pay.

No disputing the steep price here (Higgins +), but again, I'd take that gamble for such an elite talent as Hossa's.

you can also add in the exclusive rights to negotiate a new contract with hossa BEFORE july 1st, that is a luxury that has some value. also the rights can be traded as some teams did last year before july 1st, so in effect you could get a return on your investment after the season is done either way.
i love higgins, but if we can get 3-4 years of hossa maybe its a good deal, but i dont' think mr. gainey will trade higgins for anything. players like him are hard to find, so you need to keep them.
