I don't think Chipchura is ready just yet, in addition, Gainey mentioned in his press conference that he would be looking at a centre that could win faceoffs if nobody emerge from within the current player core... while I didn't look at the stats, Koivu seems to be struggling to win the "important" faceoffs... Plek and Lapierre seems to have improved though...

So Smoke goes down to the fourth line. May as well bring up Chips, ready or not. Smoke is getting 13 and change on-ice time; that would go down. Chips in the fire.

If this scenario happens however, I hope Smolinski goes home...and Laps centres the 4rth line... Anyway, not an exciting perspective really, but I think it could happen...

I like this deal.... Halpern could be a better 3d/4th liner than Smolinski, and could add some much-needed faceoff skills.
Halpern would also be an effective 3d/4th liner, which is something we lack, too often our lower lines are filled with spare defensemen, kids and guys we can't fit into the top lines for some reason, Halpern would add some real grit.
As to Ryder, it's clear we're losing him as a UFA and he's in the dog-house so whatever he might still have left in him, he won't live up to that potential here.

I like the deal too ... but I think the "rumour" is sparked by the Ribeiro-Ryder friendship. Halpern is only slightly better than Koivu on face-offs (53.5% to 52.8%)

It came out later in the summer that Gainey was interested in Halpern during the summer UFA frenzy. This may just be ressurected as SI tries to figure out what Gainey might do and to further tie Gainey's old connections to Big D.
I expect a defensive centre or a rugged forward is likely on Gainey's wish list. Another scorer a la Holik, Prospal or Nagy would work as well and likely not cost too much as a rental.

Holik brings two dimensions we don't have now. A HUGE and capable center and a nasty disposition.

For what it's worth, the Team 990 this morning quoted the New Jersey Devils broadcast team, who said Ryder for Dave Clarkson was being discussed...

My question is, how will trading Ryder affect the current team chemistry?
Cheers.

Really? I'd make this deal in a heartbeat. Clarkson is only 23 and would add alot of sandpaper to our lineup (15 fights this season!). He's a very willing scrapper and on pace for about 10 goals and 30 points as a rookie.

Yeah, Clarkson would be okay I guess.. just creates an even bigger logjam in the bottom 6 (since Clarkson actually belongs there, as opposed to Ryder who theoretically ought to be in the top 6) in my perspective though.

Well looking ahead to next season; i think there is a good chance that Smolinski and Dandeneault will not be back. And a decent chance that Streit won't be back.
Clarkson might fit in nicely on a 3rd/4th line next season with the likes of Latendresse, Lapierre and Chipchura.

Do you really think they're going to buy Dandenault out? Or do you think he'll be traded?

Do you really think they're going to buy Dandenault out? Or do you think he'll be traded? They won't buy him out, but i don't think he will be impossible to trade over the summer. If a team sees him as a top 6 defender, his contract isn't unreasonable, IMO.

If it happens, I would be be fearful that in a couple of years we might look upon such a deal as the inverse of kordic for courtnall.
