I don't think so. This story is dated (timed) at 4:00am. Here it is 6 hrs later, I think we would have heard something.

That Yahoo "NHL Expert" blogger also send Richards to Dallas... and Hossa to Montreal... Stars reaching for Richards; Habs zero in on HossaBy Ross McKeon Tuesday, Feb 26, 2008 1:00 am EST The Dallas Stars will acquire Tampa Bay Lightning center Brad Richards in a multi-player trade and Atlanta Thrashers right wing Marian Hossa is heading to the Montreal Canadiens before the NHL trade deadline, an executive within the league said Monday night. The Stars have looked to make a splash since Les Jackson and Brett Hull took over in the co-general manager role for the fired Doug Armstrong earlier this season. The source said Dallas is expected to package veteran checking center Jeff Halpern, backup goalie Mike Smith and young defenseman Mark Fistric to the Lightning, who needed to move Richards after signing defenseman Dan Boyle to a six-year, $40 million contract extension late Monday. The Stars have surprised most with their success, too, especially with Sergei Zubov missing so much time lately because of injury. But they're undersized at the center position and probably won't match up favorably in the Western Conference playoff picture without an upgrade. By landing the 6-foot, 198-pound Richards, the Stars are set to receive a player who can handle loads of ice time, has a Stanley Cup on his resumé and is a centerpiece to build around as Mike Modano and Zubov look to pass the torch. Richards has 18 goals and 51 points in 62 games, 228 shots and has averaged 24:17 of ice time. He's durable as well. Richards has appeared in 552 of a possible 554 games since breaking into the league in 2000-01. The pivot is signed for $7.8 million each of the next three seasons. Expect the Canadiens to send at least a forward (Michael Ryder?) to Atlanta, which insisted it would only trade the 29-year-old Hossa if it could get a current NHL player in return. Hossa is the Thrashers' second-leading scorer with 56 points (26 goals, 30 assists and a team-high 229 shots). Hossa is a minus-14 averaging 21:55 of ice time in 60 games. The Thrashers were in a tough spot with Hossa, who is due to be an unrestricted free agent and could walk come July 1. But getting prospects or draft picks in return – the deal offered most because contenders don't want to part with talent – wouldn't help Atlanta's bid to win the Southeast Division and reach this year's postseason. The Thrashers trail Carolina by seven points but have two games in-hand and face the Hurricanes three more times. Montreal GM Bob Gainey, who appears to have outbid the Ottawa Senators for Hossa, pointed out last week the team traded for Alexei Kovalev at the trade deadline in 2004, and despite only playing 12 games with the Canadiens at the end he decided to re-sign in Montreal. www.letsgokings.com/bbs/f40/rumor_richards_dallas_hossa_montreal-74160.htmlSorry.. the yahoo direct link doesn't work for me...

Dallas just got a lot better. They've had solid regular season teams for years.....but choke in the playoffs. Richards should help them there.
Dallas gets Richards and Holmqvist. Mike Smith and Jussi Jokinen and Halpern go the other way.
Tampa....Mike Smith is an awesome goalie. And Dallas better hope Turco stays healthy....because Holmqvist is luke warm to cold.

Smith, Jokinen, and Halpern for Richards.
Great goalie prospect, two good forwards for a big contract.

Smith, Jokinen, and Halpern for Richards. Great goalie prospect, two good forwards for a big contract. Seems kind of underwhelming to me. Halpern is a decent 3rd line depth guy but nothing special, Jokinen I don't know much about but he's 24 and he's on pace for 22 goals, and Mike Smith may be a nice prospect but there are lots of good young goalies. Maybe Richards' contract weighed down the return but this was a nice deal for Dallas as it looks like they didn't have to give up any of their core guys.

Good deal for the Stars, they get the best player of the deal. Yeah, the price is quite cheap I found. But hey, this is what happens when you limit the number of teams you are ready to go to. It should also give Toronto fans that wanted to trade Sundin some reconfort. Smith is 26 years old and has 44 games (total) in the NHL. Jussi Jokinen and Halpern are nice players to have, but certainly not elite. Pfff...

Tonight, his first game as a Star, he nets himself 5 points. Just saw that too. I wonder why there was no serious attempts by Gainey, really (even as a plan B, as it turns out that most teams seemed to have one but not us - bit like in the Brière case, that). Richards said that this list of 8 teams thing was a myth and he never said no to Montreal because Montreal never inquired about him. We are far from doomed without him, but I think he would have been worth taking a better look at.

This team needs a centre for the post Koivu era. I know Koivu is only 33 but you can't ignore a talent like Richards.

We are far from doomed without him, but I think he would have been worth taking a better look at. I can't back it up, Goo, but I do know that Gainey was looking at Richards very, very closely around Christmas time. I got a call from a buddy in Montreal, blah, blah, blah ... and he told me just before Christmas that Gainey was putting all of his eggs into one basket to make a pitch for Richards. However, that waned over time and nothing transpired. If true it might be that Richards only had a handful of teams he'd go to. And now that he's in a warm climate making $7.8 million/year I dare say it will be hard to pry him out of there; ask Mike Ribeiro. But, the short of it was that Gainey did target Richards earlier in the season. I can only speculate but I think Gainey probably went after Hossa based on the feedback he received from TB. But, who knows really. Makes for good National Enquirer kinda stuff. Cheers.

Many people feel that this trade could very well be the straw the breaks the camel back for Vinny.
The Lightning are in complete disarray, not only do they have limited resources now, their farm is arguably in an even worst shape and their GM, who just traded away 2 of Vinny's best buddy in Richards and Prospal thinks he can turn his team around by plunging deep into a UFA market which will be arguably the very least interesting UFA summer in post-lockout NHL. A nightmarish present, a hazy future and a questionable plan of action... We are far and away from the young team that had just won the Stanley Cup which Vinny chose to stay onto a few years back.
Meanwhile the HABS are on the rise, it's ownership is loaded, committed and willing to spend and the Bell Center crowd and atmosphere makes players drool all over the NHL...
If Gainey has a plan for him and moves his pawns right, Vinny fans can start dreaming again.

wondering how tampa would let him go though and not basically destroy their fan base. To get Vinny, Montreal will have to give up Komisarek and Higgins. (along with a high draft pick and maybe a prospect) Who still wants Vinny? I have stated time and time again (and I seem to be in a very small minority) that I'd trade one or both to get that top six guy we have been missing. Imagine this team with Kovalev, Pleky, Kosty, Lecavalier, S.Kosty, .... and Koivu as the third line center? Geez, even re-sign Ryder for 2.5 million for three years .... and as Kramer would say ... Giddyup!!

The GM who lets Vinny go and gets nothing in return would have to move far away from Florida.

Feaster could potentially find himself in a very tough spot, very shortly. He's planning on "rebuilding" through free agency, but it's not shaping up to be a very good free agent summer. He does have the "it's Tampa Sunny Bay" card going for him, but even still... Does he back up a dumptrunk full of money to say, Marian Hossa's house? If he does he runs the risk of being caught in the same mess he's in now, with not enough depth behind his Big Three.
On the other hand, he could try and build up his second, third and fourth lines, but that's fairly hard to do. It's one thing to add a Ryder, Holik and Commodore (mid level free agents), its quite another to actually get good real quick doing so.
So if his team is borderline again next year, or worse, really bad again next year, with Vinny being an impending UFA the circus will really take-off. And with Montreal being in the spotlight pretty much all next year (because of the 100 year celebrations), and hopefully being a contending team, you just KNOW that's going to be the question du jour; Will Lecavalier bolt (no pun intended) to Montreal the second his tenure in Tampa is up?
If Feaster can't get Lecavalier extended this summer, he's going to HAVE to trade him.

When you look around the league you can start to appreciate what Gainey is doing. Drafting superstars only to have to trade them when they hit their prime hardly seems like a recipe for long term success. Along with that you have the ego problems fed by the media and fans. Give me a team full of hard working character guys who will go through a wall for each other backed by solid goaltending sprinkled with some shifty gifted offensive players all playing a system they can use effectively and I'll show you a perennial contender.
