TSN is reporting that the Sens might deal Wade Redden in order to free up salary space so that they could sign Chara and Hossa to long-term deals. This made me think... if the Sens are interested in retaining Marian, perhaps getting his brother would help. What do guys think of a package deal involving Hossa, Hainsey and Zednik for Redden? Too much? Too little? Now this is assuming that after the trade, Redden can be signed long-term (similar to Pronger with Edmonton).

It's well known here that the Sens can't afford to keep Hossa, Chara, and Redden -- especially since Hossa is asking to be paid big boy money. Alfredsson is going to be demanding the same as Hossa (if not more) once his contract is up, so that will push the once-frugal Sens to the top of the cap crop. The Citizen (Panzeri) suggests that the Panthers, Red Wings (do they have cap room left?), and Kings are in the mix. Not sure that Muckler would be willing to send Redden where he could bite the Sens in the butt (8 games is a lot). And no matter where he goes Muckler will hear about it -- Redden is a fan favourite.
That aside, as much as I like Zed I'd do it (remembering that Redden will command Theo-type $ -- he's already making close to $4M), but I don't think it would be enough for Muckler -- he'll be looking for young inexpensive talent (highlight both words). And if Hainsey and Hossa aren't good enough for us why would he be good enough for the Sens?

I’m not sure we have a lot of room for next year, especially if the cap falls to around $36 million. As its stands now, the Habs have 7 players signed for next year, totaling close to $16 million (Kovalev, Bonk, Dandenault, Zednik, Souray, Rivet, Bouillon). That would leave them $20 million to sign 16 players, or about $1.25 per player. (I don’t know about guys like Perezhoghin and Higgins) If you sign Redden to a $5 million deal, and subtract Zed’s $1.9 million, you would have $17 million for 16 players. Not counting Koivu and/or Theodore. If both sign for $4 million each, that would leave $9 million to sign 14 players, or $643,000 per player.
But that doesn't take into account guys like Komisarek, Markov, Ribeiro, even Bulis and Begin make more than that, and in some cases could be due for big raises. Or guys like Higgins and Perezhoghin, or even Kostitsyin, who also make more than $643,000.
If the cap drops to $36 million, I don't think it will be mathematically possible. Not while keeping Theodore and Koivu at the same time.
So essentially you'd be trading Theodore and/or Koivu (both??), Zednik, Hossa and Hainsey for Redden...

You've pointed out why it's important for GM's to work to $36M not $39M. They may need the room next year. It's like playing football in November. It's cold for everybody so there is no use complaining. Overextended GM's will be giving away their high priced assets to make the cap. Only the teams that have room can take them and then renegotiate at better rates.

What has changed is the budget is now $39M vs up to $60M and the teams (even Ottawa) will be profitable. Good for the league, good for the fans, not good for the players. Now we are surprised when a team overspends granting a star like Lecavalier $7M per year vs giving a $60M contract to Yashin or Jagr.

I guess moving Hossa will help the Sens keep Redden now.

I guess moving Hossa will help the Sens keep Redden now. It depends how much Heatley will make.
