League reprimands Canadiens GM
(Mar 13) Montreal general manager Andre Savard has been reprimanded by the National Hockey League for his outburst Monday night following the Canadiens game against the New York Rangers.
The Canadiens fell to ninth spot in the standings and New York moved into sole possession of final playoff spot after two disputed goals gave the Rangers a 2-1 win.
Montreal had an apparent goal by Doug Gilmour called back after a controversial call by referee Mick McGeough, who ruled that the net was off its moorings. The Canadiens did not dispute that fact, but contended that the net had been bumped by a Rangers’ player and the goal should have counted.
In the third period the Rangers’ Sandy McCarthy scored the game-winner after the puck deflected off McGeough’s skate right in front of the Montreal net.
Late in the game, the Rangers’ Theo Fleury cross-checked Sergei Berezin in the head and the Canadiens bench erupted when no penalty was called.
Savard and Gino Odjick took their complaints to the official’s dressing room after the game.
Savard said there were no harsh words exchanged and that he was just asking questions.
“We thought Gilmour’s was a good goal,” Savard later said. “After watching the tape, it reinforced what we thought (Monday) night.”
Savard also indicated that the Canadiens would be sending a complaint about the officiating to the league office.
