CP. Montreal -- Montreal Canadiens General Manager Andre Savard revealed today that defenceman Andrei Markov's communication problems with the coaching staff and other players stem from the fact that he is unable to speak any language at all. At first it was believed those difficulties were a result of Markov's inability to speak any langusge other than Russian, but veteran Russian forward and translator Oleg Petrov finally confirmed that Markov "hardly speaks more than a few words". Savard commented that "it would have been helpful to know this earlier because [defence coach] Rick Green doesn't speak any languages either" and that "a lot of time and effort would have been saved if they'd just made faces at one another."

Additonal info:
Markov is known as "caveman" in his native village in Siberia. At 17, he skated 1200 km from his village to Moscow to join the Russian elite league. Since then, he added at least 8 words per year to his vocabulary. "Da Rick" is now his favorite expression, as long as "zhe shooots, zhe skores.... !"
Seriously, at least he's playing every game now, he's a natural, a diamond in the rough... thanks to the old scouting staff for at least making this pick a steal...

JV, thanks for the information. -- I really like what Markov can bring to this franchise.
Markov has probably had a very hard adjustment period, and he has played well regardless. For me, this only supports the argument that Markov needs intelligent, perceptive coaches. Those adjectives may not, unfortunately, apply to Therrien or Green.
It really makes you feel for this kid.

I hope this is a joke ;D Because I remember seeing a Markov interview last year on RDS.He spoke Russian and it was later translated in French.

What? Therrien not 'intellingent'..have you see a Habs game recently ? the guy is the heir to Bowman's throne OK, enough kidding around, Markov is a guy who we should not consider dealing unless we can get an established, still in his prime star or get a young stud who has just as much potential as Markov.Another thing I have noticed about him recently: On the PP,Instead of trying to blast his slap shot on goal every single time, he has been using wrist shots and concentrating on getting the puck on net. This was the reason why Gilmour scored his first goal against the Canes saturday.IF Markov can do this, while still using the blast from the point for certain occasions, he will dearly help our PP.

Good God, RantBoy is back, what happened to you? Did you get tired of beating up Old Gory? Rants like these put a smile on my face, make me trimmer and better looking and, well, make me want to ravage Nellie. You did break up with Nellie? Right? Or does she want to experience the wild side? <br> P.S. Could it be that I am just a Boy Toy to her?...oh la la... where is my bucket of Viagra?.

Rick Green vehemently denies the rumour that he doesn't speak any language. As a matter of fact he learned what he needed in Russian to give Markov the esence of his brilliant system:
Crossnot Da Zonov (Don't cross your own Blue Line) Shov ismorethenenoff (Don't hit the opponent) Fukoff Dapuck (Never try to carry the puck) Chopyournutsoff ifhogdapuck (Don't hold the puck more then 4 seconds before shooting it off the glass)

The only throne MT will inherit happens to have a shower, sink and towel bar in the same room. Doc, I'd like to have your Green translation (in Russian, of course) of MT's latest conversation with Gino. Anxiously awaiting, with my Russian/Green/Therrien dictionary in hand.
