Today we saw hockey.
We saw a team of men dominate and destroy a supposed worthy opponent. We saw 23 Canadians play Canadian hockey and dominate and destroy a team that was supposed to emulate the Canadian style of play. I just saw 46 players play one of the best games of hockey any of us have ever witnessed. One team strayed and played European hockey. One team played the game the way it is supposed to be played. One team is going home with silver. One team is going home with gold.
Canadians invented the game. Canadians play the game like no others. The Canadian style won't always mean victory, but anyone that beats us is not playing hockey. Hockey is not a competition to kill the beauty of the game. Hockey's beauty is combining talent, power, skill, and blinding speed. Only when two teams clash and exhibit all these attributes is hockey really played. Only when a team utilizes all hockey's beauty are they truly successful. Even Canadians have been guilty of straying, but on this day 23 Canadians embodied these qualities to perfection.
No, today we saw Canadian hockey. Today we won gold.

It's going to be hard having to go back and watch the Habs play. After watching that caliber of hockey. Seeing Quintal stumble around and Perrault the old plow horse, make his way up the ice. Man, the NHL is certainly watered down.
I wonder if hockey was that good back in the original 6?

It will certainly be tough getting back to boring hockey and seeing one of our best young players sitting in the pressbox or being benched.Damn,I hate Therrien.

Watching Canada play for the gold medal yesterday I thought it was the ‘76 Habs out there. Fast can hit, made great plays, check and rarely made a mistake. Only the ‘76 Habs had a little better defense as I don't think anyone on Team Canada 2002 was as good as any of the big three. Habs probably had a little better goaltending back then as Dryden was still in his prime. Scotty Bowman was a little better coach than Pat Quinn also but Canada 2002 was still a great team.
Fun to watch that caliber of hockey again!

I agree 100%. We saw how beautiful hockey can be when both teams have guys that can actually play the game as it is meant to be played. We saw fast, skilled, hard hitting and CLEAN hockey. Sticks used to manoeuver the puck, not as weapons or plows. No clutch and grab tactics. I loved the Olympic tournament. All the "BIG 6" countries showed that hockey is truly the most beautiful of sports. Fast paced skilled and physical! I truly hope that Bettman was paying attention. Let's hope this tournament propels some positive changes to the NHL action.
