We won the GOLD MEDAL withouth the best goaltender EVER,maybe the best center in the NHL today and one of the best power forwards(Daze) in the NHL today.
Shows you the depth and talent of Canadian hockey.

I'd wholeheartedly agree. In fact, I'd say that if Canada fielded a second team with the best players who were left off of the first team's roster, the second team would have probably been the third best team in Salt Lake City.

Goal: Patrick Roy Jose Theodore Sean Burke (J.S. Giguere, Roberto Luongo) Defence: Scott Stevens Wade Redden Darryl Sydor Bryan Marchment Bryan McCabe Dan McGillis Derek Morris (Robin Regehr, Patrice Brisebois, Jason Smith, Scott Hannan, Brendan Witt, Richard Matvichuk) Forwards: Eric Daze - Joe Thornton - Anson Carter Claude Lemieux - Pierre Turgeon - Mark Recchi J.P Dumont - Vincent Damphousse - Jeff O'Neill Bertuzzi - Vincent Lecavalier - Shane Doan Heck, we probably could have fielded a 3rd team!

Third?, Third? The goaltending alone would have had us 2nd. The goaltending would have been better than the 1st team. The talent drops off after a couple of other very good players (there's only 1 Joe Sakic), but we would have been VERY competitive. After about 6 warm-up games.

There is no other hockey playing country that has Canada's "problem". The other "big 6" nations had all their best players without a doubt. (ok Russia was missing Mogilny and Zubov.... but they pulled a Roy and refused to go to Salt Lake.) That is why everytime there is an important tourny there is a great debate as to the team's selection. Here in Canada great and deserving players are left off because of a limited amount of roster space. There is no arrogance to the saying: Canada is hockey... Hockey is Canada. It is the plain and simple truth. Yes, we are no longer the dominant nation in hockey, but as yesterday's nationwide celebrations demonstrated, no one is as passionate as we are when it comes to hockey. This was as important a win to Canada as a World Cup (soccer) victory is to Italy or Brazil.
