Yeah ok... so it's not even Hockey, let alone Habs. I'm also still caught up on this wave of jubilation after yesterdays amazing final. So, without further adieu, here are my 2002 favorite olympic memories (can you guess what number one is?):
(1)Canada Wins Mens Hockey Gold: I don't think I need to add much more to this. Go Canada Go. Go Canada Go.
(2)Canada Wins Womens Hockey Gold: The girls take number two, and all of Canada now revels in the absolute dominance of our national game. Way to go girls.
(3)Five Medals, One Night: The Habs should see if we can sign any of those short track speed skaters. Yeah, they're small, but they seem to be able to hit hard and man oh man oh man can they move.
(4)Catorina Le May Doane: She didn't break her world record, but in truth she didn't have to. The fastest woman on ice retains her throne for what appears to be her final Olympics. Three cheers for a real Canadian woman.
(5)Love Story: Forget the controversy. Forget the French judge. That was beauty on ice. Plain and simple. Poetry in motion and Sale and Pelttier performed so beautifully, that I almost (for a second) bought that Figure Skating could be a real sport.
(6)Beckie Scott Wins Bronze Which Should Be Gold: Another controversey, but this one has it's feet planted purely in scientific fact than in the relm of cloak and dagger stuff. Ignoring those indisputable facts for a second, it's quite feat when you consider that this woman is the first North American to even come close to a cross country medal in the Olympics. And she's ours. However, not that Danilova and Lazutina, the Russians who finished ahead of here, have tested positive for banned substance (she has tested negative BTW) - it's an even more incredable fact.
(7)Clara Hughes Wins Bronze in Speed Skating: And in the process becomes on the second female and fourth person ever to medal at both the Winter and Summer Olympics. She is a Bronze Medal winning cyclist from Sydney as well as a brilliant skater.
(8)Russians Make a Fool of Themselves: Protesting results is one thing. Actually saying you deserve gold (Irina Slutskyaev, Slava Fetisov) is another and defending a proven banned substance user is yet another. Sure - protest all you want guys. Fact of the matter is you lost. You tried to cheat to win, and it just doesn't work that well anymore. La-la-la we can't hear you.
(9)Belarus Upsets Sweeden - It couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch of guys. The Belarussian are some tiny nothing country jammed between Poland and Russia. However their hearts are as big a gold.
(10)Sarah Huges Wins Gold - She what? A couple months older than Lipinski? A beautiful young figure skater who wowed her country and overcame the stiffest competition she's ever faced. A real feel good story
