5 firsts would be require only if we decided to try and sign him as a RFA without actually trading for him...
When contract signing go as bad as this one is going, than really both party should consider a trade.

According to Schatia, Gaborik's agent he's asking for the same salary he received for last year including bonuses. Which would sound fair to me. While Minnesota is offering 1 mill less. I'd be willing to sign him and give up the 5 first rounders. Players like Gaborik don't come along very often and we have plenty of young talent coming up. I don't think we are going to get a first overall pick any time soon anyways, which is the only thing I would really prefer over Gaborik, but with Pittsburgh still in the league, I don't think first overall is up for grabs very soon.

I just don't see any team trying to sign a RFA like Gaborik. It's become an unwritten rule among owners since the Fedorov signing with Carolina.
It really boggles the mind the Wild would be so tough in contract talks with their superstar youngster. Why battle over 1 million when no Gabby means no playoff spot which means millions lost?

Gaborik is young, but not irreplaceable.
5 first rounders could get us 3 real NHL players. Team that gets the best player wins. Next years best player is Crosby. That is who we should be targetting. I would rather trade 5 first rounders for him.

Dunno. Would you trade Komi, Hainsey, Higgins, Zhogin and Katsisyn for Gaborik ?

Dunno. Would you trade Komi, Hainsey, Higgins, Zhogin and Katsisyn for Gaborik ? No I wouldn't but I would trade Eric Chouinard, Jason Ward, Matt Higgins, Terry Ryan and Brad Brown. I'd even do Wilkie, Bilodeau, Stevenson, Vallis, and Charron. I understand your point, either way you're taking a chance, this way we know what we are getting in Gaborik. We still don't know how good those 5 will be, or how disapointing. I'm just saying I would take that chance.

I understand Chopper. At this point, frankly, I'd do it too
