Refer to this article when ignorant fans try and tell you that the reason Montreal won so many Cups is because they had the Top picks of French-Canadian players for decades. (I've actually had someone ( Leaf fan) argue with me that Lafleur was acquired that way. ) Thanks to Liam Maguire for the extensive research. The Facts

...in the end, all that famous rule gave us was Marc Tardif and Rejean Houle.
Pretty insignificant.

I know . . . the discussion cracks me up . . . don't let the truth/reality get in the way of a good story though.
In fact, Doc, I guess we should be saddened by the picks . . . not only did we get Houle on the ice we got him in management as well.

. . . not only did we get Houle on the ice we got him in management as well. So 30 years after, that rule ended up costing us Roy, Damphousse, Recchi and Turgeon.

Even Sports Illustrated can't get it straight! In the latest issue (April 19, 2010) Alexander Wolff writes in Scorecard (page 14) "Meanwhile the Canadiens, with swashbuckling Quebecois carefully plucked from the territorial draft,...." He was writing about how Montreal's dynasty of the 1960's was due to their special drafting of French-Canadian players. I've sent an email to SI to set them straight (but don't expect that I'll see them correct the record in print).

I sent an email to Farber about his UFA transaction analysys & I never heard back. And that was last year.

The final straw for me with regard to Farber and his hockey acumen was that SI piece he wrote on Komisarek awhile back; that and, of course, the TSN piece (not Farber's) choosing Komi as an "all-time Canadiens great" on D nauseated me to no end.
