Been hearing that there is some interest of Saku coming back for one more year. If Gionta is not returning then I would be all for it....we could even give him the "C" back and have him play 3rd or 4th line center and PK minutes. However, if Gionta is staying, then I can't see us having room for him.

Always loved Saku. Not what he once was but if the price is right (half of what Gionta is looking for) he would be good for 10 minutes a game. With Selanne retiring and Ducks probably getting worse before better, Saku may like to finish in Mtl. No doubt Gal would gladly give #11 up (not so sure Gomer would have). We win a Cup and #11 goes to the rafters - Hollywood ending!

God please no. This would be a major step back. We already have Brière so enough with the washed out veterans.

Saku was one of the best parts of the worst stretch in Habs' history.
He got lots of cheers in Anaheim…and had his best chance at a Cup this year.
But to swan-song in Montreal would take the focus off the new breed/direction.
I can't see MB even thinking about bringing him back.

Good luck to him wherever he ends up ... I just don't see the fit in Montreal ... Bleacher is reporting that Gionta and the Habs are in serious negotiations ... maybe if Plekanec is dealt, but that's only me talking out loud ... I really like this guy and what he's done for the city of Montreal ... I just don't see the fit ... the wrong direction ... just my opinion, though ...
Cheers.

I love the idea in theory. But in practice, I don't see it working out.
If we didn't have Brière, I'd consider it, but we don't need yet another smallish, over the hill player...

Agreed that he is too small and not a player that would add anything of value except take away from a younger player. Personally was glad to see him go a few years ago.

Definitely no.
There is no need for this player on our team hockey wise... this acquisition would be solely for sentimental reason and it would rapidly turn into a circus... do we really want to have the last image of Koivu in a HABS jersey as a washed out player who'd be nothing more than a hot potatoe in the hand of his coach...
Pass.

Even in his prime, I always wanted more out of Koivu. In a diminished role, I don't see Saku working out here.

When I look back at those years, I think the sentiment/emotion surrounding his triumph over cancer trumped a lot of legit criticism.
Even though he tried his very best, displayed CHaracter on the ice, and did a ton for the city…a 5'10" #1 centre has a tough time getting it done in this era of giants.
We're in the same boat now with DD….and it's no wonder we continue to fall "short".
At some point, as Cranky+ will no doubt agree ….size DOES matter.

I would like to see a one day contract so that he could retire a Hab. He gave everything he could to the city and team. All the fans here could say was that he couldn't speak french.
How's Gionta's french?

I think it would be great to sign him to a training camp contract, have him play a couple of games during the pre-season, then have him retire just before the opening season. Maybe have a little ceremony for him during the first home game of the year.

Without challenging his acute acumen for the game, I must say that having never seen Cranky+ skate, I'm thinking the prudent approach would be to give His Crankiness a one day (two way) contract.

The fans wanted more ... I'm also sure Saku wanted the organization to give him more to work with ... But there is no denying that Saku was one of the greatest players to ever wear the Habs uniform, all that's missing is a Cup and it's really unfair to lay it at the feet of the 10th highest scoring Hab in the history of the organization. Remember, the best winger to play on Saku's line was probably Michael Ryder.
I'd bring him back at the trade deadline if he is on a one year deal.

Has anyone heard that Saku Koivu is willing to play for the Habs? If not, why conjecture about signing him? Frankly, despite being one of his greatest admirers I think the Habs should plan for the future rather than make stopgap moves. It reminds me too much of the Briere signing. Does anyone really think that adding Koivu would bring the Habs any closer to the Bruins?

I like the idea of signing him to a tryout contract and doing something during the first game. Give him a painting or something. We play the leafs first game of the season so I would love to see it. Edit: The 1st game of the season it at the ACC, so first home game
