This is all over Facebook and the first argument from Leaf fans is how their franchise is the only hockey team listed on Forbe's list of most valuable sports franchises. Didn't know what that had to do with the CH being the most popular logo: Leafs fans feel slighted after survey says Habs are Canada’s top sports brand
By Carey MarsdenTORONTO – The Montreal Canadiens are the top sports brand in Canada, according to a new opinion survey.
The same poll put the Toronto Maple Leafs in second and the Saskatchewan Roughriders football team in third.
Saskatoon-based Insightrix Research Inc. polled more than 2,500 Canadians in nine cities that have professional sports teams.
“It’s not a popularity contest. We’re not asking people ‘who is your favourite team?’ What it means is the strength of the brand, how is it perceived,” said Mario Caceres, a senior research executive at the research firm.
Caceres said the survey was done to get a sense of how strong the Roughrider brand was nationally. He said sports fans were asked several questions including what is the most respected team in Canada and which team has the most fans.
In most of the categories, Montreal was on top. And that left a bitter feeling with some members of Leafs Nation.
“I don’t like Montreal. I disagree with this,” said Toronto resident Ethan Kopecky.
Montreal was perceived to have the most popular team and most loyal fans, according to the survey. When it came to the most respected team, the Habs, Roughriders and Toronto Blue Jays took top three.
The Leafs ranked somewhere in the top ten.
“I admire Montreal, what they do and how they play, but I think Toronto is the real Canadian hockey team,” said Leafs fan Moses Pappiste.
Some fans questioned the timing of the survey. The poll went out between May 8 and May 26, in the middle of the 2013/2014 NHL playoffs when the Montreal Canadiens were in and the Leafs were out.
Caceres said they recognize the timing but credit the Leafs for taking second place.
“The Leafs haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967. So that’s pretty amazing that they’re still in second place. That’s the power of the brand,” he said.
There is no doubt the Maple Leafs brand is strong; The team was the only NHL franchise to make the Forbes most valuable teams list.
“They spend a lot of time and effort, in my opinion, to build a very strong entity in sports,” said Ross Marin, President of Fantactics Sports Marketing.
Marin said the poll results didn’t surprise him because it’s about the fan experience more than the business.
“Montreal Canadiens are doing the same thing, but they have reached out to their fans. They see the power in that.” he said. Marin mentioned another poll several years ago.
“They had surveyed all the teams in regards to how the fan experience was and they (leafs) were last on the list of all the pro sports teams in North America” he said. (link)

What's more telling, I think, is that if you poll people OUTSIDE of Canada you'll find the CH reigns supreme as well. I'm not talking about ex-pats living abroad. I'm talking about fans of hockey from other countries. Leafs fans not in the know will be disappointed to find out that as well I'm sure.

Interesting that the Jays make the list. While I've been a fan of the club since the mid 80s, I can't say that they deserve as much respect as their getting on this list, and that they're the first to come to mind is more than a surprise.

If the laffs got treated by canadian broadcasters the way the habs have they wouldn't even be in the top 5 of anything. The anguish and the hand wringing in hogtown must be fantastic. Sports radio in TO are either all over this ot ignoring it totally. Can any posters who have friends who are laff fans mention the poll and post the reaction.

Just goes to prove the torontocetric mentality of people in Hogtown. Why would they expect to be even near the top of the list. Over the last 50 years they statistically have been one of the most pathetic franchises in all of professional sport - not to mention the last decade of ineptness (one playoff appearance and repeated episodes of complete collapses). If it was a sympathy vote they should do well. In fact I'm surprised the Oilers or Flames are not ahead of them in the survey.
On the other hand the CH is iconic both because of it's storied history (24 Cups, most recent Canadian team to win) and it's significance both culturally and politically to Quebec and by extension the rest of Canada. As has been pointed out, the CH is one of the great iconic logos which transcends international borders.

None of my usual Leaf fan friends are even touching this. Just getting a lot of Habs fans commenting. The thread I was following was laced with juvenile responses from both sides, "24" ... I offered them something simple in that it's probably just the Habs turn ... back in the late 90's it was probably the Leafs who were "most whatever" ... the Habs are well represented here in my town ... lots of ball hats and a few car flags ... stuff like that ... Cheers.

Here in Edmonton there are lots of Hab fans. My guess would be that there are more Hab fans than any other team other than Oiler fans here.....hardly ever see any other colours including the Leafs.

I'd rather win a championship than take civic pride in the popularity of the local sports franchise. The Leafs have neither (and didn't even qualift for a chance to win a championship) but the Habs had a good showing in the playoffs as well as first prize in the popularity contest.

If the Leafs organisation want to increase the Leaf brand maybe they should come out with their own line of golf apparel and accessories... seeing as how they spend so much time on the course.

If the Leafs organisation want to increase the Leaf brand maybe they should come out with their own line of golf apparel and accessories... seeing as how they spend so much time on the course. Apparently the Leafs brain trust has a better idea: present Stanley Cup rings to Leaf players who won a Cup in the 60s . How pathetic is that? Gotta go back 50 years to try and revive some Leafs pride. Meanwhile Habs Stanley Cup rings (or replicas) are so plentiful they're turning up in rivers in New Brunswick. Are people starting to get the picture why the Habs are Canada's top brand?

That attitude is so unreasonable of Leaf fans! Why don't they acknowledge that the Habs are more deserving of approbation and widespread fandom even in the southern part of Ontario? They just don't get it!
