Too little too late, again. Chased the game 20 seconds into the first period. Some bad penalties, but virtually no offensive pressure until the 3rd period.
Was almost shut out for a fifth time this season.
Good luck against Chicago.

Well, it wasn't a blow out loss......
2nd period was absolutely terrible.
2 goofy goals against, but didn't deserve this one anyways.

I wonder what excuse they'll have for this joke of an effort. They talk the talk though.
And way to have them prepared MT...

I much prefer the angry MT from 2001 as opposed to this creampuff... no emotion no fire... no wonder the players have no emotion.

Didn't see the game….got home from Toronto to see 2-0 with about 5:00 left.
Only 9 or 10 shots after 2 periods….wow. Pretty much tells me about effort.
We're right back to not knowing what to expect from this team on a game-to-game basis.
Suter wasn't even in the lineup.
After the loss to Buffalo on Friday, I predicted 1-3-1 for the next 5 games….and that seems very likely now.
Minny's D-coverage must be better than Colorado's. Ha!
After the 6-game winning streak, we've gone 3-4-1.
Is it the older/slower d-corps since Gonchar and Allen came on board?
"Not in the game at all," says Sergio Momesso. "If Minnesota had any PP at all, it would've been much worse…"
Leadership???

At what point do we notice that the Emperor has no genitals?
This team is not taking winning seriously and MThead can't motivate them nor has a clue on how to improve the PP.

I'm sticking by everything I've said in the DD thread I started. He is not, nor will ever be, a #1 centre on a legit contender. It's got nothing to do with language/heritage/home province. It's got everything to do with size. It's MORE than time to start developing Galchy at centre. For the love of all that's silver…..

MT's post-game comments:
We played the way we were supposed to play in the third….but we didn't compete in the first two periods….so we have to make sure we compete right from the start.
Duh….
A reporter asked him, "Is there any way to put your finger on where the energy/effort was in the first two periods…"
MT: "No."
What kind of an answer is that?

Is it the older/slower d-corps since Gonchar and Allen came on board? "Not in the game at all," says Sergio Momesso. "If Minnesota had any PP at all, it would've been much worse…" Leadership??? The old/slow d-corps doesn't help with getting the puck out. That's one problem. The slow starts are the main issue. On one hand, the coach needs to be certain the the players are prepared right out of the gate. On the other hand, the players need to get their heads into the game right as the puck drops, not after. The coach is an easy scapegoat, but how many more coaches do we have to go through? I imagine acquiring Gonchar and Allen were to fill the void Gionta and Gorges left. Oops. Problem is, I don't see why Tinordi and/or Beaulieu can't grow into leadership positions. Agreed on the consensus about Desharnais. We have four capable centers: Desharnais, Plekanec, Eller, and Galchenyuk. We can't keep both Desharnais and Plekanec. Move one and put Galchenyuk at center, for the love of Pete.

Gotta get a player in the room that will light the fire. IMO, that's what Pleks' role should be. He's just too low key. We need that experienced center with a burr up his ass. The Gilmour type that will stand up in the room, be heard, and get a response. We need goals too.

Pleks has never been that kind of player.
Besides, we need someone whose play would back-up those words of fire! Like an Henri Richard…my lord, contenders/champions are full of those battlers.
The players who do that on a consistent basis now are Gallagher, Galchenyuk, Prust, Weise….I'm talking about going through walls.
Subban used to do it….but he's hit and miss in that area lately.

Completely agree. That's one of Pleks' shortcomings. No doubt, we'd miss him on the PK, but room needs to be made.
Pleks and a spare part D for a legit winger that scores. Fill the PK role with Bournival or a veteran winger who goes through walls on and off the ice. Chicago is HARD up against the cap. Maybe you find a way to send them Tinordi and a pick for Seabrook. They're so desperate, it's going to be dumps with no salary coming back.
Those are the kind of moves I want to see. I think about players around the league, and the player we need Pleks to be is Mike Richards (with more life in his legs). I just wouldn't touch that contract, but that's the type of player. Grinding, mean, motivator, winner, skill.

Can't win playing 20 minutes. But we almost did. Both Minn goals were flukey. The first seemed to go softly off Carey's shoulder, roll off the cross bar, hit his back and in. Carey should have had it but odd roll off his shoulder. Second goal was a high stick, and a fluke one at that. Not sure what TO was looking at. Simple physics indicates no goal. The puck goes over PK's shoulder while he's standing straight and continues to rise then hits Pomme's stick and goes down. Unless PK is only 3 foot 6 inches tall the puck is clearly above the cross bar at 4 feet.
And what was with the phantom call on Allen. He's bad enough on his own but at least when he makes a good play it would be nice if he wasn't penalized for it.
Anyway, same old same old. Chucky and Sekac were our best forwards. DD, Parenteau, Max, Pleks, were no shows until the end. And what's with BGal and the big contract?
I would like to see MT platoon Gonchar, Allen, Markov, Gilbert, Weaver. They would all do well with a rest every 4 or 5 games. And it would pay off over the long season and into the playoffs - particularly with Markov and Gonchar who will tire at this rate if not get injured.

It seemed like a blowout loss...and the sole goal came about a minute from the final buzzer. I don't know what else a coach can say in that situation. "Well they were out all night at Mary Lou's and they had nothing left for the game until the testosterone replenished itself." Not going to say that right? I also think he honestly doesn't know. There's either a lack of leadership to get the guys going, or they're not working as hard as they can for MT on a consistent basis.

They would all do well with a rest every 4 or 5 games. And it would pay off over the long season and into the playoffs - particularly with Markov and Gonchar who will tire at this rate if not get injured. I agree that both goals had some horseshoes attached to them, especially the second. Pominville is heading for his fox hole to avoid getting his head knocked off and the puck goes in off the shaft of his stick. I don't think we had the best angles on that shot. The one from the Minny end that clearly looked like a high stick was from a low camera, so the angle made it look like a high stick. The one from behind Carey was inconclusive IMO because it was too high. Pominville ducked so his body and hand were a fair bit below the bar. That was a tough one, but it was no doubt extremely lucky. A lot of that has been happening against us and while we deserve it sometimes, we didn't that time. (Except we had a chance to get it out and didn't). I really don't like the speed on our defence and mentioned it a few games back, before it began to rear its ugly head. I also see that Tinordi is developing a reputation for being slow. That's very misleading. He has a long stride, so his immediate first two steps aren't the quickest, but I think he'd be in the top half on the whole team if pure top speed was measured. Those long strides eat up a lot of real estate. We are missing the speed that Beaulieu and Tinordi can bring to the back line, but they're not going to be in the line-up until March or so, after the trade deadline. The team has to justify taking on those veterans, and they are a difficult situation to manage. While Berg got rid of Bourque and Moen, he's saddled Therrien with two old guys at the back end. Gonchar has been ok and would be better yet with fewer minutes. If I had my druthers (I've lost them and they're gone forever) I'd dress six of PK, Markov, Weaver, Gonchar Emelin, Beaulieu, Tinordi and Gilbert, rotating all but PK, with Markov and Gilbert resting only occasionally, Emelin rested a tiny bit more and Weaver, Gonchar and the two kids rotating into the line-up. The older guys would get a rest and the kids would get experience. Allen may have to be waived as Bournival will be off the DL shortly. Injuries would look after some of the problem, if they'd just conveniently happen to the right guys. That line-up will never happen. Too many big contracts and too easy to bury the kids in Hamilton saying they're getting playing time. Yeah, at a pace that ensures they won't get better. Oh well.

Through the 1st 2 periods they had 10 shot... Dale Weise had 3 of them. Dale freakin Weise has 30% of your shots.
Other Canadiens shooters, through two periods, were Tom Gilbert, Brandon Prust, Eric Tangradi and Sergei Gonchar.
Here’s who played 40 minutes without registering a SoG: Brendan Gallagher, Thomas Plekanec, Alex Galchenyuk, P.A. Parenteau, Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban.
The following is from an article on HIO.

What bothered me most was the response to the situation. They talked a good game but didn't deliver.
If the passing of maybe the greatest player in franchise history can't get a rise out of you then what can. For two periods they looked like they couldn't give a sh!t. It's embarassing and an insult to the franchise.

We're right back to not knowing what to expect from this team on a game-to-game basis. Frustrating. Good teams have a real identity and a consistency to their game, and I just don't see it. I believe the talent is there to be a top 4 team in the East, but we have been a frustrating team to watch for the better part of 100 regular season games. Of course for Therrien it's all about "competitiveness". Just try harder! But that doesn't explain why we only had 10 shots through 2 periods or why we typically get outshot in every game, or why we are the WORST 1st period team in the NHL. For a team that should be good at controlling the puck, we do a lousy of job of that with disorganized breakouts and a below average Corsi when the score is close. The wins cure all and we are still feasting on the hot start, but the underlying trends are concerning. Maybe it is time for a trade?

I'm tired of seeing Eller lose his best linemates. I think it's pretty clear at this point that MT plays favourites. I know it's not DD's fault, but I think this preferential treatment turns a lot of fans against DD. I wonder what effect, if any, this has in the dressing room. I can't imagine Eller being ok with it.

Compete level to start a game--and well into it--has been a problem since Game 1 in Toronto. And MT can't put his finger on it? It was either an arrogant answer along the lines of, "Hey, I'm doing all I can…it's the players!"….or he really doesn't have a clue. Bergevin better lend his fingers to the situation.

I think having the 4 A's is becoming a real problem and there may be divisions forming. Earlier in the season when Weise of PK scored, they did the X thing with their arms, when Patches or others scored they didn't do that.
I am also getting very tired of seeing our D dump the puck off the boards/glass and losing possession instead of making a pass and maintaining possession. You wonder why we suck? That is one of the main reasons.
Maybe Denis Coderre needs to tweet something to wake these bums up.

Marinaro singing my song…. MT did everything on the first line last night…adding Sekac….adding Weise….everything EXCEPT moving DD off. He currently ranks 55th in scoring among league centres. 55th! That's a #1 centre on a contending team… Please…enough of this nonsense!
