You cannot read the article any other way than: COACH'S STORY: The player initiated the move by expressing to the coach the desire to move back to the wing. PLAYER'S STORY: The coach initiated the move by approaching the player and asking if he'd be comfortable moving back to the wing. Infer what you will. That's funny, maybe if Galch had expressed a desire to stay at center he would have. Maybe MT actually listens to what his players say. How horrible of him. I know what the MT haters are going to infer. I said above that I'd be critical of any coach misrepresenting an encounter like that. MT just happens to be the coach in this instance. If Mike Babcock did the same thing, I'd be critical. And who said anything about hating? That might come later, ha! But not as yet.

You can only see it as some kind of misrepresenting act if you hate MT though. It's a non issue, blown up by haters.

I like Bowness as a person. Seems like a good guy. When I think of him, I think of someone like a Gerard Gallant. "the good cop". Makes for a great assistant coach, but not necessarily a prime head coach. He's an assistant right now with Tampa.

It's a leap to say people who criticize MT based on the quotes in the article are blanket haters. Just as it would be a leap to say people who defend MT on this issue are MT blanket apologists. It's a flawed assertion. I'm not a Therrien hater across the board. Are you a Therrien apologist across the board? You and I disagree on this issue. No need for labels. Therrien isn't immune to criticism after reading an article like that. If I found out it was massaged by the writer, then I'll recant, no question.

Nope, in your case, not a leap at all. Completely valid. MT isn't perfect, he deserves some criticism, but not to a ridiculous level like it is. Some real criticisms don't get posted because people don't want to feed the haters fire. Heck, some guys don't post anymore at all. I guess with a team in first place, playing relatively well most of the time, some people just have to have something to complain about or they'll pop.

In fact, in your judgment, I'm actually driving members away. Are you sure you're speaking for everyone? Have you conducted a survey? I've taken your concern to the mods and if that's the overall sentiment, I'll gladly leave the board. But I'm sure there are other haters here, too, in your estimation. Hopefully, they'll leave with me so you can have the board just the way you want it. I'll get back to you.

I for one seriously considered leaving the board because it had gotten away from the insightful respectful discussions it was originally to every post turning into a MT bashing with childish name calling. I certainly dont post or read as often as I did before so if you are taking a poll it is pretty clear where I stand. I'm not an MT apologist or backer and I thought it was a mistake hiring him but he has turned me around. This is the best team in years with almost going to the finals last year and a legitimate shot again this year. Last night they showed that Montreal has the third most road wins over the last three years which some credit has to go to coaching.

Hello THF, Well, it's good that you're still checking in ... thanks for that ... if there's something irking you and you want to discuss it maybe consider dropping one of the mods a PM ... if it's personal, please also consider dropping those you're in conflict with a line also ... ... Therrien? The lack of goals is a concern for me but, we've seen them come back from a deficit several times earlier in the season, so they can score ... I just don't know what's different about then and now ... Scott Gomez recently commented that he was required to play a dump-and-chase game in Montreal, which requires a lot of grinding along the boards, but he couldn't because of his lack of size ... if that's still the game plan then I'm not so sure we have a big enough team to play that kind of game ... mind you, some of the best I've seen from our team was against the Devils 6-2 and the Blues 5-2 (in St Louis) ... I'd like to know where that team has gone, of late ... Cheers.

I'm not sure where I stand on the Therrien fence. I admittedly waver, but then again, while you can not argue with his results, you also can not argue with imperical data ... I'll elaborate on that later.
I often ask myself, what is the Montreal Canadiens system? Does anyone know? We ice the puck seemingly more than any team in the league, we go offsides an awful lot, we do employ the dump and chase, and our coach believes the team to be a grinding team. We also sit on leads still, and play a safe style, in my opinion. But we keep on winning. So you have to give the coach some credit right? Whatever our system is, Michel Therrien told The Montreal Gazette's Christopher Curtis "We aren't changing the system. Nothing. No team this time of year is changing anything". So the system is rigid from here on out.
So are we performing as a first place team because of this system? Well let me first provide one statistical number. 0.936. That's Carey Price's save percentage. It's quite frankly other-worldy, when you consider its been at over 0.950 since January. If Price was playing at say 0.925, that would be 18 more goals on him. 0.925 would still have him 4th in the league and still in the Vezina conversation. Now how about if he was playing at his career average 0.919? That would be another 28 goals against him. I think, while it might sound a tad anecdotal, it's fair to say that a Carey Price with a 0.919 save percentage and we'd be looking at 7-8 more losses, and we'd be fighting Boston for a wildcard.
Now I'm not apologizing for having Carey Price on the team. He is our star. But Therrien doesn't coach Price. I've often heard it said on here that Carey Price makes up for a lot of Therrien short comings. Is it true? I don't know. But I recently read an article on seven coaches and if their records over their career was due to goaltending. The coach whose record, according to their analysis, was most reliant on goaltending was Michel Therrien. The coach whose record was least reliant was Mike Badcock.
We are winning, and I don't think one of us will complain if Michel Therrien's "system" brings a Cup to Montreal. But let's not kid ourself that it is an offensive system, or a defensive system, that's putting up those Ws. It's Carey Price.
Another thing we have to consider, is Marc Bergevin's acquisitions. When you look at his moves, do they fit into a Therrien system? He got rid of Moen and Bourque in an attempt to get Sekac more playing time. He acquired Gonchar, Petry, and brought up Beaulieau (not Tinordi). Three puck moving, offensive defensemen. It seems to me, from the outside looking in, that Bergevin wants a fast offensive system, not a grinding team that relies on the goalie. Will this cause some GM-coach tension? I dunno, but we are playing a style that, in my opinion, is completely ill-suited to the composition of our team.

I'd like to at least clear up one point and I'll ask you Paul, since you have been objective over the time I've read you.
What exactly did Therrien say to Galchenyuk and how was it phrased? I'm trying to get an accurate translation I know we can't get the tone of the conversation, but I want to know if it was a leading question or manipulated in any way or if Galchy just expressed discomfort playing centre without any encouragement. Thank you.
My training has always been to start from a skeptical viewpoint because when peple came to see me, they wanted something from me so their stories didn't necessarily portray the full picture of a situation. That resulted in me developing a really keen B S meter.
Lately I've exoressed it more often than I usually do....but after two years of 'sensing'.
If I'm dealing from inaccurate information is like to know.
I have expressed many times thatI feel Therrien doesn't have what he'd like to work with so I don't mindlessly bash, and I provide information as to why I feel as I do. That can be debated, no problem. I bash with a mind. Some others feel the same , others don't. Debate away but provide some factual or anecdotal info as to why you feel that way and how my conclusions are incorrect.
This forum has always been about that.
Cheers.

Well, the article doesn't have many direct quotes. We can only surmise what was said, based off of an article written by a reporter after a conversation *he* had with Galchenyuk. I could try and upgrade the google translate, but it's not bad at all. --- It's pretty clear that Galchy didn't explicitly ask to be go back on the wing, but that he was comfortable with it, he had his say (so it's not like MT just told him "you're back on the wing, deal with it"), and felt he could be more productive on the wing. Based on the quotes later in the article, I think he knows he's going through a tougher stretch and is better on the wing, while when he's doing well he could be a top-6 center. I suspect he was told that given his lack of production, he'd either be a top-6 winger or a 3d line center (as he'd been for part of the previous game, with Prust and Parenteau) and he chose the wing.

I question some of MTs decisions, mostly because i don't see the logic behind it, but you can't argue with his record and the success the team has had. The thing that concerns me the most is that the system does not appear, to me anyways, to be conducive to the type of players we have and hence the issue we seem to have scoring goals. MT has a system he wants the players to play and the players do their best to play it. I get frustrated when we lose to teams we shouldn't, re: the Senators, and i post accordingly. Maybe i need to wait before posting after a frustrating loss. In the end It all boils down to the fact I've never been to a Stanley Cup parade in Montreal and I'm 51 years old and i want to see one before i kick the bucket

They play a chip-and-chase style with the added threat of long passes to stretch opposing defenses in the neutral zone. Thats seems to be their offensive game...... They believe it fits their players best as they think they are fast enough to get to the puck before the other team. They place the puck in the right spot they be will be there first. The bruins played the same type of game except with their personnel even when they don't get to the pucks first the come in hard and take the body. Canadiens are a faster team... Not very imaginative, not pretty, not great for your possesion numbers but looking at the record........ In large part to Carey Price of course ,it works, I think. But of coarse they are allowed to carry the puck in....if for example the opposition is not set up in their defensive positions, they have the go ahead to carry the puck in.
Don.t necessary love the dump and chase but i do like the way he works with the young players. Makes them earn a spot by playing the right way. buying into his game plan or u sit or get set down or play less minutes. i think it worked with subban, pacioretty and Beaulieau(good stretch of the season anyhow).

The center also has an added responsibility, when trying to get the puck out, we want the C to be in the middle of the ice, available to take a pass, so that the winger doesn't have to beat the D every single time to get the puck out; it means better breakouts when it works. I think people read too much into MT's "grinding team" comment; I think he just wanted the guys to realize you can't always be a finesse team, sometimes you have to dump and chase and work hard for every single shot.

I don't know if I've heard him describe the team any other way ... if he has, well, I just don't watch as much TV as I used to ... Well, they haven't been much of a finesse team of late, and I don't see the speed that has dominated some games this year either ... I'm still of the opinion that the missing goals can come from this group, but I don't know what has to change ... is it the system that's holding them back, or is it just a pre-playoff slump ... I don't know either way but I still hold the opinion that these guys are better than what they've been showing recently and my expectations haven't waned ... I'm still expecting big things from them ... huge, man ... Cheers.

Generalized statement but unless you got Malkin and Crosby on your team you won"t go far on speed and creativity alone interesting thing . . . the 80s Oilers were know for goal scoring . . . but changed to a more defensive style in the playoffs. and won. a few more goals here and there *cough*PP*cough* and methinks there'd be less worry. it's those last 7 games . . . reverse that in the the next 7 and we'll all be a bit happier. very doable.

I've been reading this site for well over 10 years, I created this account just to say that most of the interesting and insightful posters either left or were kicked off the board. Seems like all the moderators and strong voices agree on everything, and if someone has a strong disagreement the "code" is usually used against them. What made this board interesting to read were conflicting opinions and colorful characters, maybe a couple of the power mods and supremely negative ones are the ones that need to go away.

Ozzy, was this really necessary? ... publicly? ... it's too bad that your only post is to tell us what's wrong with the boards and the community ... and why, if our community is so dysfunctional, have you been following us for 10 years ... if there was a problem a while ago it might have been better to have brought it out when it first occurred ... letting it stew over time just creates situations like this ... Cheers.

It's certainly an odd way to contribute. I think there are plenty of different voices here, and opinions. In all the years I've been here I don't recall a mod waving the code of conduct in someone's face either. At any rate Ozzy, hopefully that won't be your only post.
