www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=776057Forward Alex Galchenyuk and the Montreal Canadiens have agreed to terms on a two-year contract, the Canadiens said Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed, but ESPN.com reports it is worth $5.6 million, an average annual value of $2.8 million. Galchenyuk, 21, played 80 games for the Canadiens last season and had NHL career highs in goals (20), assists (26) and points (46). The No. 3 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft was a restricted free agent. He has 104 points (42 goals, 62 assists) in 193 regular-season games.

The Subban deal. Now get him producing at center. We'll be better for it, and he'll cash in.

First thing I thought of ... edit: it seemed to take a long time just to get to that number ... that said, I'll hand it to Bergevin ... he's all about the business ... Cheers.

To me this seems the only viable alternative for now. I am happy this is resolved. But I cannot help seeing but this to be suboptimal outcome for Montreal and perhaps for Galchenyuk as well.
To think the counterfactual if one contract of Gilbert, Emelin or Plekanec was erased for 2015-16. Galchenyuk signs 6 year 30M deal. The organisation locks in a top piece. Galchy does not have to worry about Therrien leaving him on the wing in the near term.

Sweet number ...but dangerous if there is truly a rift between Chucky and MT,.especially if he isn't given a chance to really flourish these next 2 yrs.
Really hoping they put him in every possible situation to be an elite player he is one of the keys to keeping the Habs window open for a long while.

Given the way he played in the playoffs, I think we should be thinking less of Galchy as a sure-thing #1 center, and be more concerned about whether or not he can be a top-6 forward in the future, or if he'll regress. It happens.
If ever there was a strong case for a transition/Bridge contract, it's Galchenyuk.

Strangely enough, the year before, he was quite good in the playoffs, despite coming back off an injury. I wouldn't put too much weight in the last playoffs for Galchy. After that centre stint and the return to wing, I think he was pretty mixed up with what was expected of him. Personally, I'd rather have inked him to a long term contract. I think the chances are better rather than worse, that this contract will be short term gain for long term pain in the case of the team. He could have been had cheaper in the long run with a long contract now. But, that's only my opinion, so we'll have to let things evolve and see what happens.

Galchy does not have to worry about Therrien leaving him on the wing in the near term. I can't help but wonder if the Voracek contract pushed Galchenyuk to take the bridge deal. If Galchenyuk strings together a couple of 70+ point seasons over the life of this bridge contract then he too will be looking at a long term deal north of $8 million. Heck, if he puts in a couple of 60 point seasons he'll be making over $6 million, I think. So I don't think there was too much incentive for him to sign long term at the moment, and I can't help but think that the Voracek deal just confirmed that for him. Either way, it's nice to have him under contract. For all the hand-wringing about Bergevin's "inactivity" on July 2nd he's had himself a busy off-season; he's got everybody signed, including a major free agent (Petry), he's made a big deal (Prust/Kassian), and he's cleared out some dead weight (Parenteau). Oh, and took a big swing for the fences with Semin, with little-to-no risk of a strikeout. Not bad, considering it's still only July.

Yup, MB certainly hasn't been twiddling his thumbs this summer. He's addressed several things and I think the team has gotten better overall. The only real step backward would probably be in the character department, but I would still consider this a strong character group.
I forget who it was, probably MB or MT, but they said that they were prepared to take a step backward in the 2014-2015 season. I hope that was the reason why they used such an ultra defensive system. This year, I think/hope the coaching staff will have more faith in this team and give them some more rope.
If they are indeed granted more rope, I expect to see a happier and more productive Alex Galchenyuk. But, if Galchy's development continues to be stifled, my insolent remarks towards Therrien will become more harsh and much more frequent.

Personally, I'd rather have inked him to a long term contract... Galchenyuk confirms it was his camp's idea to go for the bridge deal. The long term option obviously wasn't available. In Galchy's skates, that's what I'd do too. He'll strike it rich on the next one.

Good to see this all get done. Last piece of the roster puzzle (for now) and the Berg was able to get all that done by the end of July. Yakupov got $2.5M average, Zibanejad received similar money (and is a year older) and Stone received more money but is two years older. I think this is a good deal for both sides. The Berg now has 47 players under contract (three contract spots in reserve for any deals down the road) and about $2.9M in cap space to play with. So far so good.
Petry, Kassian and Semin should be an upgrade on Prust, PAP and whomever was overplayed in the second pairing on D (Emelin or Gilbert for the most part).
Now if we can all collectively inspire MT to get Chucky into a top two centre spot and get DD onto the third line wing, we may be cooking with gas.

It's just a number and hard to equate it to 'real' things, like food on the table.
