At his golf tournament today, of which only 2 current roster players participated (DD & Eller), MT was quoted as saying
John Lu ✔@johnlutsnmtl #Habs Therrien on how to motivate Alexander Semin: "It's not like the old days when it was 'my way or the highway'" 1/2
John Lu ✔@johnlutsnmtl 2/2 MT says keys to motivating Semin are communication, the athlete's own pride and peer pressure, citing how committed #Habs already are.
I agree with the last 2 but I hope MT communicates more than we have seen on 24CH.

He's been very good at developing that team culture where the players care for each other and defend each other. When you hear this quote from him, my eyebrows will go up. "Yeah, we looked at all the statistics of who plays best with who and where dey are most productive, and at how we come out of our end and enter de other zone and we're going to make some changes in dese areas. We're also going to try and give our young players more responsibility and expect dem to rise to the occasion". PS. We have to find a better cliche than one involving the word "Leaf".

It sounds logical what he says about Semin. For me, a hockey coach or boss only is marginally able to be source actual of motivation. The team culture, the passion for hockey in the city, and Semin's desire to play team hockey at high level are more influential factors.

Perhaps something to consider is the fact that MT knows he won't likely get another coaching job after this one if he maintains his reputation as a hard a%%. Look at Mike Keenan for example. Besides, players at this level should be driven from within and not as a result of head games.
I view Semin as another Kovalev i.e. A supremely talented player who needs an audience to appreciate him. He'll get that in Montreal if he shows up to play. Nothing MT can realistically do besides benching him if he doesn't.

Semin is a total crap shoot ....if he can help the PP that would be the real bonus ..I'm more concerned he concentrates on getting Galchenyuk to that elite level he needs to be at ....and that goes with giving Eller better opportunities and a kid like Kassian whom if he sours on too quickly will be lost.

The age old question: have players like Carey, Max, and PK become stars because of MT or in spite of him? I'm in the latter camp. All these players were expected to be stars and became such. i guess one could argue that at least MT didn't impede their development. And if Chucky has a great year do we credit MT? Perhaps he's in a no win situation. Has MT taken any so so players and made them better? Hard to say. On the other hand are there players who were coached by MT and didn't play well and went on to flourish under another coach? Can't think of any recent former Habs who I'd like to have back.
All this is to say, I don't see MT having any influence on Semin except if MT loses patience quickly in which case Semin gets less of an opportunity to find his game (if it is ever to be found again). Same thing for Kasian. As for Chuck, I get the sense ethat he is frustrated with MT's treatment of him, as am I. Wouldn't it be something if Chuck could centre Semin and Kasian to be our top line and one of the best in the league. People would say MT is a genius. i would simply say the pieces fell into place although I would give MB some credit.
Edit: Of course if Sekac gets 20 goals with the Ducks this year then i'll be really pissed with both MT and MB!

I'd like to see Galchenyuk centre Semin and Kassian as well and hopefully for more than a cup of coffee. The one thing with MT who's has changed somewhat is his old impatience still very much exists...especially with line combos. Defensively this line may give MT fits so I can't see him even trying....we'll see soon enough.

To be fair though we can't peg eveything that goes wrong on MT and pretend that on the other hand he has nothing to do with everything that goes right...
Pacioretty, Price, Subban, Gallagher, Markov, DD, Pleks are all performing up to their standards. Galchenyuk has progressed every season and while we are eager to see him get even more responsability, there is certainly something to be said about being extra cautious with the devellopment of a young high profile top 3 choice, in a crazy market like Montreal. Beaulieu is coming along nicely as well.

He doesn't talk about having adopted a new philosophy. He believes this has always been his approach. And therein lies the problem. i've heard from the players and I've seen him conduct himself on CH24 and it is an authoritarian style. That wouldn't be so bad if he had a good understanding of the game and was able to adjust his strategy but he is simply unable. Anyway, let's see how Sekac does this year.

Pretty interesting statements from players not with the organisation... people can say Sekac has sour grapes but Bourque... he got every opportunity to have success and was given chance after chance.

Imagine if he gave that kind of press conference (Pens 2006) after a game in Montreal. He'd be hanged from the rafters and vilified by the media.
