The real danger here for the Leafs is if they have a pick in the top 10 in 2020 and then top 3 in 2021 (maybe through the lottery). Imagine giving up a top 3 pick to get a 1-year contract off the books.

I guess that Marleau deal is Lamoriello's revenge.
No 1st this year & next for the Leafs.

That is a steep price. Dubas obviously was not the one who signed Marleau to a three-year deal, but he had a lot time to see the problem the third year would pose and be more proactive (losing a first round pick is a result of being cornered) by bridging one of their young stars.
Carolina is cheap so I would expect something more to happen with Marleau rather then the Canes just plugging him into to their fourth line and happily paying him the 4.25 million of real money he is owed.
Does the trade being announced today mean it is consummated today? Dundon is actually willing to pay Marleau's July 1 bonus?

I expect Marleau retires, or gets moved to SJ with a lot of salary retention.
Good point about the bonus though, I wonder as well.

He didn't get Nylander signed until the last day & IMO, overpaid. And he promised not to trade him: www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/opinion/2018/12/04/leafs-gms-promise-to-nylander-could-be-as-good-as-the-next-trade-offer.htmlHe trades a 1st for Muzzin & now he gets forced into giving up a first to get someone to take Marleau. Unimpressive so far.

They have to, and will, buy him out. Marleau gets $2 million in 2019-20 and 2020-21. He likely signs in SJ for $1 million.

Then there’s Jim Benning. Gives up a first rounder, with a risk of being a lottery pick, for JT Miller. Decent player but he solved a CAP problem for Brisebois! That’s worth something. Maybe a second round pick and B prospect but not their first! Bennings drafting has been good but his trades and contracts suck.

Canes announced they will be buying him out. Expect a deal with Sharks July 1.

Carolina is an odd organization. They are willing to pay $4.5 million out of their not so deep coffers for what will probably be a late first round pick but they are apparently more than prepared to play hardball with Aho.

And they also just made a deal with ChicagoLas Vegas, taking an expensive D as I recall (Erik Haula). I wish Berg would swoop in, and make Aho a 2 year offer for a small fortune, and we'd be set up front for a while. (We'd extend him for 8 years next summer)

I think it was Waddell dumping De Haan less than 12 months after he signed him, which is in character for the cheap Canes.
I agree regarding Aho. I am not sure if Aho would want something as short as two years just because anyone can sustain a serious injury at any time. But he would probably feel great about a front-loaded, bonus rich five year deal (maybe 5 x 9.2) because this kid is obviously a US resident and those signing bonuses would be sweet music to his bank accounts.

I suggested 2 so that he'd still be an RFA afterwards, and it might not need to be stupid money to get him to sign. But that's probably pie in the sky thinking...

There are a couple of clubs you could offer sheet and have some success due to cheap and meddling owners. CAR and OTT are top of the list.
