dumb question but i forget... If a UFA agrees to terms with another team can his present team match the offer and thus keep the player. if so then i don't see Garon getting much more than we are presently paying him and we could simply match if we feel we need a backup. -------- Osgood out 3-4 weeks. Cairns out 6 weeks!

No, you don't get picks, or right to match. Picks and right to match are for RFAs. Garon and Hack will be UFAs, all we might get is a compensatory pick (that the league adds to the draft) in 2004 for Hack (not for Garon, different kind of UFA), even then we only get one if we don't go and get much in terms of UFAs, which is unlikely given AS's penchant for veterans.

Please do.... I'll even help you out, Manny Fernandez is another... remember, for every Nabakov there is a Rick Knickle, and countless nameless, faceless goalie prospects who just never panned out... plus a number of European guys (just like the players) often only come over at an older age.... but anyways, obviously not every single goalie in the history of the NHL was a starter at 18 years old... the difference is, there were less teams and less jobs to be won then (not to mention a number of those late bloomers showed the were NHL caliber before being starters) and now with 30 teams, you got a guy who couldn't crack the line-up, plus with all the big-time young goalies in the league, these guys get weeded out. I never said he'd never make the big leagues, he could be pretty good, a decent back-up, Roloson's no slouch you know... but you do see this guy starting 50+ games for you? I don't. Garon has had Theo, Thibault, Hack and Moog ahead of him all along, you can't blame him for not making it yet. I see Garon as a Mike Dunham-type late bloomer.

You've got a point there, PTH... but you figure talent breaks through no matter what, and if Garon showed he had what it took, they'd have had to make room for him... plus they'd save dough and get talent back for Hack... but anyways, his career ain't over yet though, by no stretch, I've just never been very impressed with him when I've had the chance to see him, don't think he has what it takes to be a starter in this league, at least not a top-level one. Agree to Disagree!

Agree to Disagree! I think Garon's value, at least as perceived, took a dive with his clearing waivers. That being said, picking up a player off waivers isn't all candy - you have to keep him and play him, otherwise he goes back to his original team. As to Hack.... for over 2 years now it's been clear he should be dealt, but no chance really came up, he kept on getting hurt, so can't blame Garon for his not having pushed Hack aside, Hack was impossible to move. In short, yup, agree to disagree.
