I work with a guy who comes from Sept Iles and he had some pretty good stories about three NHLers who come from that town; Guy Carbonneau, Steve Duschenes and Karl Dykhuis.
It's actually pretty funny. My buddy was playing with the bantam team and they brought up a pee-wee player to play with them. That player was Karl D. I guess the guys would pass the playboys back and forth when they did their 8-hour road trip to Quebec City. All except Karl that is. He took ribbing from the team because he was at the very back of the bus playing with his GI Joes.
The ribbing only lasted a short time. Basically, the team attitude changed when they saw this little guy get on the ice. He was just as fast as they were and shot the puck that made opposing goaltenders duck. The word around the league went pretty fast; there was a young kid from Sept Iles who could blast the puck; and ducking goaltenders became the norm.
My buddy said, Karl could basically do what he wanted on the bus after that. He was only a kid, but impressed everyone I guess. Heck, he made it to the NHL.
Ah, if we could only tap that resource now. Ah well. Pretty funny story though. I had a good chuckle over that one.
Cheers.
